One Ringy Dingy, Two RIngy Dingy – New in the Shop

I took sometime off schoolwork for a little creativity.
Many of you have seen the first version of the Chainmaille rings that are available in the shop. Did you know you can now custom order one in your favorite size or metal of choice? These fun, fashionable and simple rings can be made just for you.
Single Jump ring design
Simple, stunning and sturdy, and surprisingly smooth surface feel, this lovely chain maille ring is a wonderful addition to any jewelry box. Attractive and eye-catching the band slips over your finger easily and fits comfortably. Suitable for women, men or teens. Not meant to be worn during heavy work or lifting, with proper care and gentle treatment your ring will last a life time.
Created from 18g Sterling Silver plated wire, hand spun, cut and linked in a simple maille weave, the ring above is shown in an average US size 7-1/2 to 8. Measures 3/8″ wide.

If you do not know your ring size you may try the following method.
Tie a piece of sting or twist tie around your finger loosely, allow it to fit, but slip on and off easily. (string or yarn works best)
Slide the string off your finger.
Cut the string just below the know and measure it against a ruler. The average size 7-1/2 to 8 ring will measure about 2-1/2″ in length. If you require a larger ring, please indicate your ring size, or include the measurement in inches you took. This will ensure a proper and secure fit.

In My Studio New Chainmaille Ring

With the holidays over, and things almost back to the norm here I finally had an opportunity to sit down and make something. It had to be a quick project, something I could complete inside a couple of hours. This ring will be included in the projects for the E-Book “In Chains” currently in progress.
The solution was a Mini Maille Ring. It didn’t start out as one, but during the process of weaving, it insisted that it be small and round, and I had no other choice but to join the ends and create the small circle of maille.
This ring comes in two sizes of jump rings and has many variations. It can be beaded, made in a variety of metals, and customizable in your ring size.
Simple, stunning and sturdy these rings are not meant to be worn during heavy lifting or hard work with your hands, but treated properly they can last life time.
Sample Ring: US size 7-1/2 to 8 average ring size for most folks.
18 gauge Sterling Silver plated wire. There is no elastic or clasp, the ring slips over your finger and fits comfortably. It has a silky smooth feel against the skin and makes an attractive ornament.
The completed ring sits on a ring mandrel.
The finished ring, there is no stop or start, the band is joined in pattern and left as it is.
The ring like any other is a simple circle, instead of a solid strip of metal interlocked rings have been woven together.
Very pretty when worn. A lovely decoration and perfect for those that like the look of maille but do not wish to wear a large piece.
Available in Sterling Silver Plated, Silver, Gold Tone, Copper, Merlin’s Gold, and antiqued Copper and Bronze. 18 or 20 gauge wires, plain or beaded styles in single or double ring weaves. Single ring weave shown in this post.

Monday Celtic and Dragonscale Weaves
Good Morning,
In hope that many of you spent the weekend doing something pleasant with your children or for yourself, instead of dwelling on the tragedies of last week.
Although there is nothing new in the shop, there are still plenty of beautiful things to look at, or perhaps you still need a gift, Tuesday December 18th will be the last GUARANTEED mail date for your gift to arrive by Christmas. Order soon.
Today I would like to introduce you to two new weaves, to be available at the end of January, when the new line of Aluminum Chainmaille jewelry is introduced. Aluminum? You ask. This is not the aluminum your beer can is made out of, no indeed not. This is high quality, natural (silver tone) and anodized aluminum, in absolutely gorgeous colors. Ranging in a variety of gauges, we would like to begin to purchase our supplies from Blue Buddha Boutique, a Chainmaille Jewelry and Supply company. Due to some recent changes, equipment failures and several other incidents, I simply need a supplier.
The Celtic Bracelet, shown below in 16 gauge Natural Aluminum and 18 gauge Aqua (Anodized) jump rings, makes a beautiful, shiny and substantial bracelet. With proper care and feeding, this piece will last a lifetime and longer. Available in an array of colors and two sizes, super light weight, easy to wear and to care for. It should be noted that the construction of maille usually does not allow for soldering, so the rings remain “open”. Rough handling, pulling or other stress may cause the rings to come apart.
This is one of my very favorite weaves and I have finally conquered it. Dragonscale is another version of European 4-in-1, that involves exact size and placement of the jump rings to achieve this scaly appearance. Simply gorgeous in this Large Size sample, it takes a while to weave. 18 gauge Natural Aluminum and 18gauge Aqua and Purple Rings are placed and linked in this stunning pattern. The Aqua rings lend this piece an iridescent quality that the photo just does not capture.
Available in an array of metals and anodized colors, and three sizes, Large, Medium and Small, this refers to the size of the rings used and width of the piece, not the length. Average length is 7-1/4″ in length including clasp, longer chains may be made upon request.

Friday Random Jump Ring Surprise

I might as well tell you now, there is no surprise, well maybe some of you will be surprised. I don’t know.
I am at a loss for subject matter today, and as I sit here and stare at the blank screen, mocking me, and urging me to type something, I got nothing.
As many of you know I am just mad about Maille, Chainmaille that is. Spelled properly, Chain Mail is the process of connecting metal rings to each other to create clothing or other items, commonly referred to as Armor. Although Chain Mail is the accepted spelling many Maillers use the spelling maille, as do I, to separate the terms from the mail you receive at home or “Chain Letters“. Some are attempting to have the word changed to “Maille” in the dictionary.
So what does that have to do with anything? Absolutely nothing, just a neat piece of information.
Some of you are aware that I am in the process of attempting to fulfill an invitation / request to create an on-line or e-book about Maille, “In Chains“. In my research and trying out different weaves, I made a mistake in a pattern, and thought it looked kind of neat. I continued playing with the position of the rings until I came up with a short length of chain seven units long with individual links that resemble an eye or lace.
Nicknamed “Odin’s Eye”, until I can come up with something better, this weave is from the European 4-in-1 family. The “Helm” weave, of which Odin’s Eye is a variation, consists of two outer rings connected to each other, supporting an orbital or floating ring that is sandwiched between them. This weave is thought to originate in Scandinavia. This sample below is Mini or Micro Maille, with an AR of 4.8 and 2.9 for large and small rings, I cannot manage to get the same twist to occur with larger scale rings.

This variation turns the pattern inside out, with the floating rings connected and capturing the inside chain with smaller rings on the outside and twisted, knotted, or mobiused through each other, creating an X or crossed shape at the edges. This gives each individual unit the appearance of an eye. Created from hand–spun and antiqued Copper wire.

Monday always brings me to new items in the shop. This morning is no different. Studio Syllabus for Today

Here we are the middle of the week, not quite the weekend and almost too late to start a work week project. Today’s post is short and sweet as I suddenly find myself with a multitude of things going on and all kinds of doings which require my attention.
Let’s have a look at what I have been doing. I offer a variety of Chainmaille items, from Earrings to Watches and most stuff in between, and tried a new way to bead the Full Persian Weave and I am most happy with it. Reminiscent of the “Dragons Back” pattern, “Leap Frog” incorporates one bead at alternating intervals down the length of chain. Flexible for a comfortable fit, substantial enough to make a nice statement piece, so in fashion this season.

On an interesting note, I have been invited to participate in a Consignment shop, Inspired Creations, of Spokane, Washington. Although this is just an invitation and I have yet to confirm what will be available in the store, or what I will be sending, it may be a great opportunity for exposure and expanding the shop a little. I am cautiously excited!
The Treasure Valley Flea Market was an enjoyable event. A good time was had by all. We’ll be doing it again next month, November 10th and 11th, 2012. This will be the last Market before Christmas, come on down and get your Holiday Shopping done early!
