Featured Artists Brooklyn Bead Goddess

Good Morning,

Today I am pleased to present fellow Forum member and handmadeartists.com shop owner April, the Brooklyn Bead Goddess.

April has always been intrigued with glass, and remembers watching the Glass Artists along the boardwalk of Cony Island, captivated by the sparkling and delicate sculptures they made.  As an adult April has taken that childhood fascination and turned it into a business.  She is also  a registered SRA member G-122, and SRAJD # 2147 member.

Created by lampworking or flameworking, April takes glass rods turns them into beautiful glass beads, which she then incorporates into her own lovely jewelry designs.  She over sees all aspects of the process including kiln annealing and final cleaning with a special bit for her dremel tool.
Recently  she has started to make large hole beads that are so popular right now, like the Pandora bracelets.  I like hers better, though.

Studio R and D – Alcohol Inks Have Arrived

Good Morning,

Happy Hump Day to you all.  The middle of the week brings me to the past couple of days of Research and Development with a new technique.

Several weeks ago I visited with a friend and fellow artists who was kind enough to allow me a to try out her new Alcohol Inks.  These work on metal, paper, glass etc… they come in a variety of colors and manufacturer brands.  I could not find the brand she was using, but came across similar colors in trios by Adirondack.

Left to Right:  “Brights” in Watermelon, Citrus and Lake.  The other package is in Spanish, Woodland or Farmers Set in Raspberry, Forest and Plum.

The process is a messy one, and trial and error should be employed carefully.  Gloves should be worn, this is ink and it will dye / stain any thing and everything it comes in contact with.   These tiny feather charms are done in Forest and make a very pretty finishing touch for bracelets or earrings, appropriate for a pendants as well.

Soon to be incorporated into items and available in the shop.

The technique is super simple, as shown in the brief video below.

Also in new in the studio are these simple and very pretty Memory Wire and Glass beaded bracelets.  14″ to 16″ of memory is cut and threaded with lovely shiny glass bi-cone shaped glass beads in a variety of colors.  The one below is Clear, Silver, Smoke, and Black combination.  May be made in single or multiple colors.  Soon to be available in the shop as well.

Also available in purples, blues, and pastel colors.

Thank you for stopping in and having a look.

The Alchemists Vessel would like to wish you a pleasant Wednesday.

Friday – Links and Promotions

Good Morning,

The weekend is here and I am looking forward to it.  Means that I will have some time to sequester myself in the Office and get some stuff done.

I was cruising around the interwebs looking for something interesting to share.  I found a couple of videos on glass-making, and thought it might be fun to search for glass beads, this is a neat little video about glass beads and how they are made.

Have you seen this yet?  My very favorite Twisted Little Thing from my friend and very talented sculptor Ralph Cordero.  If you’re in to unique collectibles don’t miss out on these gruesome cuties!

Hal I Toesis

Description: Twisted Little Thing – Hal I Toesis – Approx 3 inches tall 4.5 inches wide. Solid cast resin, detailed mini sculpture collectible.

I knit, and I just love this idea!  I must find patterns to make these for myself. I found them on Etsy and I know at least two of that read this are just going to go nuts for these macabre creations fresh off the needles!  These are just awesome and lots of fun.

Amigurumi Zombie Head

Description: While zombies are generally looked down upon as uncouth and uncivilized members of society, they’re really just trying to get by the best way they know how and want nothing more than to get along with (and eat) their fellow man.

This handsome gent has pink eyes, black hair, and a lovely crimson gash along his right cheek.

Zombie heads are approximately 2.5″ high and are made with acrylic yarn, wool felt, embroidery floss, cotton and/or polyester thread, polyester fiberfill stuffing, fabric glue, and fabric ink.

This item may present a choking hazard and is not intended for small children or pets.

****************************************************

And while we are on the subject of random weirdness, let’s take a little segue and ask the readers:

Just what the heck is this thing?

Yes, I know it’s a spider, smarty pants.  What I want to know is what kind of spider this is.  I have never seen one before.  I was sitting at the workbench and up the wall it crawled.  This is big, too, you could put it on a leash and take it for a walk.  No, I didn’t squish it, I caught it and put it outside.  It has a reddish-brown thorax and legs, it’s abdomen is black and striped in white.  Creepy little arachnid.  Any ideas on what it might be?

Thank you for stopping in and having a look.

The Alchemists Vessel would like to wish you a pleasant weekend.

Butterflies In The Backyard

Happy Wednesday,

The middle of the week is here and the count down to Friday begins, not only that, but today is the official first day of Summer! Happy Solstice everyone!

I think the blog has become a little stale of late, the same subjects all the time week after week.  Thursday’s Featured Artist is fun and looking at all the shops and things on Etsy is a blast too, however, I am running short of contributors. Bringing on a decision to every once in a while step away from the work and jewelry aspect of the blog and talk about something random.  On occasion this has occurred, but it needs to become more of a regular thing.
In today’s hustle and bustle, instant gratification world of hurry, hurry, now, now, we sometimes forgot to look up from the phone screen, stop texting, step away from the computer or whatever holds our concentration and attention, and take a look around the real world, the one we live in, not the one we cultivate via electronics, gagdets and social networks.

Having said that, I would like to share a neat experience.  Yesterday, as I sat at the workbench (table), I glanced out the window and was surprised by this wonderful, huge, beautiful butterfly crawling across the potted marigolds on the deck in the backyard.  Opening the sliding glass door requires some effort, instead of wasting time fighting with the track, and snatching the camera off the table instead, I slowly crossed the carpet to sit quietly at the backdoor and take these pictures through the plate glass window.
The camera is set on 13x zoom, and the photos are a little fuzzy, but the detail is pretty amazing for my little Canon A480.  I took them in order as it walked across the petals and then flew off.  Missing the final “in flight” shot, the wings are still awe inspiring.  Such a delicate creature, I think this is called a Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly.
There are seven photos in total.  It must have walked the flowers for two or three minutes allowing me to finally get a really good shot of its wings.  Although taken through plate glass window, I don’t think I could have captured this creature’s beauty if it was three inches from the camera instead.
I thought it was ready to take flight in this picture, until…
Oops, apparently not, either that or it figured out it was being photographed and allowed me to take a picture of its wings fully extended.

It did finally take off, and as mentioned above I did miss the initial shot I had intended to take, the camera has a strange almost three second delay, however the wings are a sight to behold.

Thank you for stopping by and having a look.  In hope that today’s blog has brought a smile to your face and a moment of calm while you read.

The Alchemists Vessel would like to wish you a wonderful rest of the week.
