Featured Artist Diane Shye on Etsy

Good Morning,

This morning we have a featured Artist from Etsy, Diane Shye, of Diane Shye Jewelry.

From: Diane Shye Jewelry

Engraved Sterling Silver Star Pendant 3D Abstract

Description:  This one-of-a-kind handmade 3-dimensional engraved sterling silver abstract star artisan pendant is handmade by DianaShyeJewelry on Etsy.

I engraved the base of the abstract star pendant with a dramatic oval circle design. The upper layer of the pendant is an outline of the base star that I riveted to the base with copper wire rivets enclosed in thin sterling silver tubing.

The pendant is 3” (7.6 cm) long and just over 1 ½” (3.8 cm) at its widest points. It comes strung on a black leather cord that measures 20 ½” (52 cm) including the handmade sterling silver clasp. The leather cord could be removed and replaced with different chain or cord of your choice.

Gold Egyptian Coil Necklace Amertine Beads Handmade Ethnic

Description:   This 14 karat gold filled wire Egyptian coil and ametrine bead ethnic style necklace is handmade with ancient Egyptian techniques by DianaShyeJewelry on Etsy. The spiral components are 14 karat gold filled wire, about 11/16″ (7.5 mm) wide; each coil is 5/16″ in diameter. The beads are ametrine 9 x 11 mm puff coins.

Ametrine takes both a light amethyst and a light citrine color, so these colors alternate in the necklace. These are high quality beads with a beautiful transparency, so the necklace has a regal look.

The design is finished off at each end with a short lengths of handmade 2 in 2 chain plus a 1 3/3″ extender chain and a lobster claw clasp (all 14 karat gold-filled wire). You can wear the necklace at variable lengths from 16 1/2″ to 18 1/4″ (42 cm to 46 cm). The ametrine bead dangles hand 1″ (2.5 cm) from the line of the necklace.

This necklace is an eye catcher with a lot of presence, but it’s comfortable to wear and lightweight (1.5 oz. or 42 g.).

Description:  This handmade modern minimalist sterling silver wire cuff bracelet by DianaShyeJewelry on Etsy features a warm brown chrysanthemum stone with flowery patterns.I put recycled sterling silver through a rolling mill to make the long sturdy square wire that forms the cuff of the bracelet. I then created a classically simple sterling silver bezel setting for the 30 x 40 mm chrysanthemum cabochon and soldered it to the cuff. In the final step, I enclosed the cabochon in its setting and formed the cuff to its oval shape.

The cuff is 7” (17.8 cm) in length with a 1” (2.5 cm) gap between its two ends. It has a slight spring to it and can be adjusted to comfortably fit wrists from 6” – 7” (15.3 – 17.8 cm).

Thank you for stopping by and having a look.
The Alchemists Vessel would like to wish you a pleasant day.

Quick Pictorial Tutorial Thursday

Good Morning!

The week is winding down and so am I.  Today I thought it would be fun to look at an easy and relaxing jewelry-making craft, Wire Wrapped Rings. Yes, I said, relaxing. This is actually a really fun and super simple project.  Even the kids can do it!  One of the best things about this project is that it takes just minutes to do.
Wire-Wrapped Rings in Sterling Silver plated Copper jewelry wire

I think every jewelry blogger, designer, maker, or hobbyist, eventually sits down to write about or make one of these simple and pretty little rings.  This includes myself.

All you need:
Jewelry Wire – *20 or 18 gauge (any type) Colored (anodized) Aluminum works well, too.
(*I do not recommend 16 gauge or 14 gauge)
Permanent Marker or Lip Balm (or any round object – a “mandrel”)
Pliers – if you like.
*Extra Embellishments (not necessary, but fun to play with).
Button
Glass Seed Beads (Size 6)
NOTE:  Jewelry wire comes in lengths measured in yards, usually between 8 to 10 yards per coil, that’s 24 to 30 feet of wire.  You can make lots, and lots of rings with a single coil.  The Sterling Silver Plated Copper jewelry wire I used for this project is packaged by Darice and available at local craft stores for about $3.99 for 8 yrds.
Simple Tools and Wire
First measure and cut two pieces of wire 8″ long.
Gently fold them in half.
Don’t let the ends cross.
Put them together and place the marker, balm, or other round object ( “mandrel” about the size of your finger), in the fold.  Bend the wires around the marker or balm with your fingers.
Don’t let the ends cross, keep each wire next to each other.
Next, Adjust the wire where you want it.  *Remember it will be a little looser at this stage.  That is OK.  With your fingers, hold the bottom of the wire against the madrel, with your other hand, take the wires between your fingers and twist in a clockwise motion, locking the wires together (like a twist tie).  Keep the wire as tight as possible against the mandrel as you twist.  Twist only once.
Twist the wires once, clockwise.
You may take a pair of pliers or your fingers and bring (pinch) the loops together.

Now  continue to twist the wires, one group of two at a time around each other twice or three times.  Stop.  Can you see the “rosette” forming in the center of the ring?  Good.
The Rosette is formed and wires are divided.
Now, divide the wires.  Decide which wires will continue forming the rosette and which to pull away from the center.  Do not cut the wire.  Above the wires closest to the rosette have been left in place, the others have been stretched out and away from the center of the ring.

Continuing wrapping around the center wire forming a larger (or smaller) rosette as you choose.
The Rosette is complete, the wrapped wire is now much shorter.
Trim the excess wire from the Rosette.  You may wish to leave a little extra to bend over and tuck under the edges of your ring.  I did not do that in this example.  However this helps to keep the wire from snagging and possibly ruining the ring.

Next, and this can be a little tricky.  Remove the ring from the madndrel, choose one side of the ring and begin wrapping the other length of wire around the shank (round part) of the ring.  It helps to bend the wire slightly so it slips into the center of the ring.  Wrap the wire down the shank.  Make sure to wrap both sides.  This will help the ring keep its shape, make it a little smaller in diameter, and adds an interesting design element as well.

One side is of the shank wrap is complete here is the other side in progress.

Make sure that the wire ends are on top of your ring shank, cut off the excess wire, keeping the ends up and away from your skin so you do not scratch yourself.

The complete ring on the marker (mandrel).
You can wear the ring on any finger it will fit on or that you have sized it for.

Pretty little bauble

Completed ring.

You can also bead the last twist of the wire around the rosette if you like or you can use a button as a focal point.  As shown in the alternatives below.

Black Czech Glass Seed Beads adorn the side of the rosette.
Shell Button Ring
The button ring is made using the same technique.  Once the wire has been placed around the mandrel, side the wire through the thread holes in the button.  Bring the button down as close as you can to the mandrel, and then twist the wires together.  Instead of separating the wires and wrapping them down the shank, use all four to form the rosette in the center of the button, cut off the excess wire and wear for fun or with Kitschy fashions!

Reddish-Orange Shell Button with complete rosette
There are many other ways to add to or embellish the ring.  Why not try glass bi-cone beads or a gemstone or maybe even a crystal.  Perhaps a charm or other interesting object, like a gear or tiny vacuum tube could be wrapped as well.  The possibilities are endless.  What might you design?

T.A.V. would like to thank Carrie S. for the use of her camera.

Thank you for stopping in and having a look.  We hope you found this tutorial interesting and will try a wire-wrapped ring of your own.

The Alchemists Vessel would like to wish you a pleasant Thursday.

In My Studio At The Work Bench Wednesday

Good Morning,
The middle of week arrives, bright, shiny and hot!  It has been over 100 degrees here in the lovely City of Trees, and yesterday the high was a scorching 105!

I am so glad that there is air-conditioning in the office / work area.

I have been working on a number of things, including the fourth module or unit of my own class.  Excited about finishing up one or two of the graded assignments as well.

Currently we are designing a line of rugged, strong, handsome, durable and sustainable jewelry for men.  Gemstones, Chainmaille, and natural materials for bold, solid, statement pieces that work well for costume or casual attire.  We are also working on a line of finer jewelry accessories like tie-tacks and rings and are in hope of showcasing those items soon.
Primitive and  rustic is “Thane“, an Antiqued Bronze and genuine Pyrite necklace woven in the Full Persian Chainmaille weave.  Perhaps the Badge of Honor or Mark of Rank with in the Clan or Village.  The pendant is a genuine Pyrite “Doughnut” left in a natural state with pits and polish along the surface.  (I said PITS).  A natural Pyrite oval bead accents the center of the pendant.  The toggle clasp is manufactured and fits the style of the chain well.

*The word Thane usually means any person holding an aristocratic status somewhere between Baron and Freeman under an Anglo-Saxon Lord.
Antiqued Bronze jump rings are linked together in the Full Persian Chainmaile weave, formed by beginning on either side of the pendant and ending in a double-loop toggle clasp closure.
Detail: The genuine Pyrite Doughnut has been strung on Jeweler‘s Bronze (Merlin’s Gold) wire, and a genuine Pyrite bead has been centered as an accent, creating a unique and interesting focal point.
The Full Persian Chainmaille weave is intricate and beautiful.  Strong and supple, it feels smooth when running a hand along the surface.  It has the  appearance of interlocking individual units, although the chain is created two jump rings at a time.

The Toggle clasp is a simple and sturdy closure.  A bar is attached to two lengths of chain in this style and it’s circular “lock” is attached to the opposite end of the chain, the bar is slipped through the circle and holds itself in place, as seen here.   This particular toggle clasp works exceptionally well with this chainmaille weave it allows for the double row of jump rings to remain consistent and even, ensuring a balanced and secure fit.

Also along the same rustic and primitive lines is a piece I haven’t decided what to title it yet.  Based on a Rohirric ideal of design is “Horse Lord”.

Created using natural bone carved into to a horse head toggle clasp is just the start of my version of what is commonly called a “Torq” (also spelled Torc and Torque).  A Torq consists of long strands of metal that have been twisted or woven together to form a rope, the ends are capped with balls, squares, and sometimes the heads of animals worked or cast in metal.  Some torqs were meant to be worn for life and were very difficult to remove if made of metal bars bent in to shape and closed or secured with heavy metal end caps.  Many modern jewelers still use a method of twisting or weaving metal strands sometimes called “Viking Knitting”.  This piece is a twist on the traditional design idea, incorporating chainmaille instead of strands and a toggle clasp for easy on off, instead of a permanent adornment.  A work in progress there is only about 3-1/2″ total completed.  The two inches of chain is Antiqued Copper spun in a smaller diameter for a sleeker look.

Highly detailed carved natural bone Horse Head toggle clasp, its mate is a round piece of bone shaped to fit over and rest with the curve of the neck.  May be worn in front, back or on the side to show off this very handsome and well done equine portrait.

The other side of the toggle.  Mouth, nose (even nostrils), mane, eye, and ears are easily seen.  The eye has been painted with a tiny dot of black for definition.  The short length of chain beginning the Torq can also be seen.

Soon to be listed for sale.

Thank you for stopping by and having a look.

The Alchemists Vessel would like to wish you a pleasant rest of the workweek.

In 2005, while working as a Custom Picture Framer for a local arts and crafts store, I started teaching a beginning crochet class. I enjoyed sharing my enthusiasm about the art of crochet, with my students.
It was during this time, I discovered crocheting with wire and beads. I was (and still am) awestruck by the simplicity of creating jewelry, by crocheting beads to wire.

What’s New In The Shop – Metal Monday

Good Morning,

I hope all had a wonderful weekend, I certainly did, it was also my birthday!

Although there are no new items in the shop at the moment, there is something new that I am working on.  It’s a secret, but a little progress shot or two never hurt.

Designed using two different patterns.  Below you see simple, short lengths of chain woven from Nickel jump rings in a European 4 -in -1 and a variation.  These weave are also available for jewelry.

Next, a little progress,  Two lengths of chain are being joined or “married” together.  Several more individual lengths will be created and added to this.

Top Down View

Side View: This pattern lies flat and creates a nice pattern that has lot of movement and light play, although the jump rings may turn, the lengths of chain are supple with little rigidity to allow for “give”, and wear and tear when the piece is used.

Any one want to hazard a guess as to what it might be?  No?  How about if I said there are 310 (give or take) 3mm I.D.  jump rings in these short lengths?  No?  How about a hint?  Something may be put it in.

Thank you for stopping by.  The Alchemists Vessel would like to wish you a wonderful week.

New Items In The Shop? Yes, Indeed!

Hello Monday Morning!

The week begins with a bright and shiny day in store for us at The Alchemists Vessel.

Today we have a new chain to show you in two sizes, it comes in four styles and may be special ordered to desired length, metal of choice with added Gemstones or Czech Glass beads.

This is a very pretty weave, here its laid out horizontally to show size difference.
Top: Small version Silver Plated wire hand-spun in to jump rings.
Bottom: Large version Gunmetal Jewelry wire, hand-spun in to jump rings.
Somewhat like the lacier-look European 4-in-1 weave, this is more of a closed weave, but still light weight and feminine.  Small is 15-1/2″ long and the Large is 17-3/4″ in length, they rest flat against the throat, and shine in the light.  Each chain is finished with a matching toggle clasp.

This weave tends to resemble a “Fish bone”  or Herringbone pattern.  Serpentine in appearance, the chain is supple, strong and sensational alone or when accented with semi-precious gemstones or Czech Glass beads.  Shown here in the smallest version, Silver plated wire and unadorned.

Here is the same pattern in the larger scale, accented with drops of jump rings.  Beads may be added to these, or left as it is for more monochromatic look.  The rings may be removed and replaced with Semi-precious Gemstone drops.

Here is the small version, accented with Amethyst Czech Glass Silver Lined Beads.  We have a variety of colors to choose from, if we don’t have your favorite, we can make it!  Would make a great Birthday gift in a Genuine Semi-precious Gemstone bead, or Czech Glass color to match.

This may also be woven to bracelet length, usually about 7″ to 7-1/2″ long for women.  Also available in Antiqued and Bright Copper,  Antiqued Bronze and “Merlin’s Gold” (aka Jeweler‘s Bronze), Nickle, and Plated Copper Jewelry Wire, also available in Precious Metal choices.  Please contact us to discuss your custom order.

These pieces are of course available at The Alchemists Vessel on Etsyhandmadeartists.com, Facebook Fan Page (you can shop directly from that page as well.  Click on “Etsy Theme Shop” or “The Alchemists Vessel” buttons, under the cover photo!  They’ll take you to pages that have special deals, and you don’t even have to log out of face book.  That’s super convenient! You can find these links on the right hand Menu as well.

A gentle reminder:  ROCK STARS in the shop are going, going, GONE on Wednesday, May, 9th.  A Limited Edition now only $7.50 to $10.00 a pair.  This special offer will soon be gone forever!  Hurry and get your favorite!

Sterling Silver and Genuine Peridot Earrings.  Sterling Silver Star Charms have a Brushed finish.

Available in a variety of Birthstone and other Semi-precious Gemstone selections.

A note about the website http://alchemistsvessel.net.  We are in the process of revamping the site, just a little and it will be up and running again soon.  Thank you for your patience.

Thank you for stopping by.  The Alchemists Vessel would like to wish you a pleasant day.
