Fair Isle and Faux Finds

Good Morning,

Happy Monday, I hope that all had a restful and relaxing weekend and are ready to get back to work and be constructive and productive.

This weekend at Little Shop of Artists, we demonstrated Fair Ilse Knitting, an Intermediate Knitting Technique,  and set some new items on the shelves.  Talented and crafty, our resident staff person, Alixandra, worked up a length of a lovely Wintery style Fair Isle Knitting sample in Snowflakes and Bordered Inset Diamonds.  

Knit with Caron Simply Soft 100% Acrylic in Deep Plum Heather and Plum Heather, 4 (Worsted weight) Gauge = 18 sts. and 24 rows = 4 inches square on Size 8 (US) 5.0mm.  
Project – Size 9 (US) 5.5mm Needles
Gauge – 6 sts. = 1″

Fair Isle knitting is a method of “stranding” color as you knit.  Unlike stripes that are knit back and forth row by row, one color at a time, stranding uses two (or more colors in some cases) in the same row, creating a picture / pattern when complete.  As each stitch is knit in its specific color, the color not in use is carried across the knitting by “floating” the unused yarn along the back of the work until it is needed to form the designated stitch.  Many Fair Isle patterns are written in charts as you see below.

Here the white squares represent the background or main color used through out the project.  The blue squares indicate when the new color will be used to begin the contrasting color pattern.  Fair Isle is not only beautiful when finished it is also fun to do!

When complete the sample above will serve as a Winter Scarf.

New Items on the shelves.  These simple little wood boxes are painted by hand using a variety of materials and tools to create unique and interesting faux finishes.  The box below looks like it may have been carved from a hunk of Jasper or perhaps an agate of sorts.

Captured Color Collection Chainmaille Bracelets

After the weekend‘s events, I am pleased to be back at home and ready to be at the workbench.  Apparently there was some excitement at the Gun Show this weekend when a patron accidentally fired a loaded weapon, smashing a display case and injuring another Gun Show attendee with either the bullet or flying glass from the display case.  The local news was rather sketchy about the facts of the incident; but folks this is why Gun Control is necessary, people are STUPID!

There are cute new bracelets in the shop and they may be made to desired length or crafted in longer lengths for a Necklace.

Is everyone ready for the work week?  No?  Neither am I, we’re in good company apparently.

Monday always brings me to new items in the shop.  This morning is  no different.  Over that last several days I have been busily linking jump rings to make these fun, affordable and durable Chainmaille key-chains.  There are three currently listed for sale, but I will be adding more over the next couple of days.

Aluminum Chainmaille Key-chain with Feather

In My Studio Project Pandemonium

 

Hello,

Wednesday greets Idaho a little grey today.  In hope that means more rain to clear some of the smoke from the fires that are still burning in the area.

I have several projects going on in the studio and sharing is always good.

After last weeks tutorial I couldn’t help but try my hand at a Micro Maille version of the Jens Pind weave.  After working out an appropriate AR of 2.92 I have come up with pretty and sleek 7-1/2″ length of Sterling Silver Plated (over brass) Chain.  I am unsure if I want to leave it at its current length or continue and create a necklace instead.  There are endless possibilities as I look at the unfinished piece.

Shown here wrapped around a quarter for size comparison.  This weave, like most, is supple, strong, and makes for lovely jewelry.

Hand cut jump rings have an angular or almost mitered end when snipped with wire cutters, this is called pinch cutting. 

After reading another post on a Forum, I began searching for something called Alcohol Inks.  These are nifty little inks that will color metal.  Shake the object up in a bag with a little of the ink or dab it on with a sponge applicator.  I practiced on two aluminum bells (any metal will work).   My friend, who is also a jewelry designer, graciously allowed me to try the pieces below for fun.  She too has recently discovered this interesting way to add a bit of color to her designs.

This is a messy process, even thought the ink dries fairly quickly, your fingers will get inky, the table top will get inky, and your clothes will get inky.  You can even mix or ink over other colors to create really pretty effects.  The metal maintains a shine when the ink dries, a plus.  These bells really ring, too.

There are a couple of other projects in the works as well. Working on creating a complimentary something for the cast flower,  the next Flea Market is just around the corner, and preparations for that are happening as well.

Monday Means New Shop Items

Happy Monday Morning,

Now that the custom orders are completed and on their way to their new owners, I took a moment to take some pictures of a couple of new items in the shop.  Not only are the items new, but so are the materials.

White Metal Chains, Glass Beads and “Tibetan Silver“, just to name a few.  It should be noted here that like “German” or “Indian” Silver, “Tibetan Silver” usually contains little or no silver whatsoever.  It resembles an antiqued silver piece and is highly popular in jewelry creation for today’s current fashion trends.  It is mostly Tin and Zinc, and is usually nickel and lead free, due to allergies to these metals.

One of my favorite items and already listed on Etsy is:

Twilight Time

7-1/2″, this lovely beauty is one of a kind.  This sparkly three strand bracelet is a combination of  three different styles of chain link chains, and glass beads in a bi-cone shape, in purple hues ranging from deep purple to a soft pink.

Deep purple, pink, wine, and lavender glass beads.

Next is a cute and very Gothic “Día de los Muertos” themed jewelry set.  Tibetan Silver Pendant and Charms compliment the very pretty Black, Smoky Purple and Silver Glass Bi-cone beads that form the rosary style chain.  Finished with a white metal link chain for durability.

My very good friend, American Artist, Allan O. Mudd, is up next with $25.00 Giclee prints of his Original Acrylic Paintings.  Giclee is a digital process and I do not know much about it.  The first one offered is a Tiger, 8 x 11″.  Contact him for further details.  Allan’s art ranges from small (like the Tiger print) to enormous 3′ x 4′ paintings on Masonite, cabinet doors, walls, floors, paper, canvas. Talented, with a unique style all his own, give his other works a look too!  There is no doubt it is an AOM original.

These are so cute, and very very clever!  $4.00  Upcycled re-purposed Puzzle Piece Earrings.  Created by Shelly Moody of Green Witch Designs, she is one crafty Witch!  What a fun and unique idea for jewelry!  There is more than one pair of these Jigsaw Puzzle earrings available, have a look around her store for other fun things.  Reduce, reuse, recycle!  She has that down pat!  I just bought a pair of her earrings, her jewelry is fun, spunky and so reasonably priced, I couldn’t resist!

We like Purple, oh yes we do!  Prices vary on this fun and cool list of items.  Purple Passion Treasury curated by The Brick Boutique is a collection of items from their store and around Etsy, that are, you guessed it, purple.  Jewelry, clothing, nick-knacks, everything is purple.  I am honored and excited to be included in this collection.   Here is a knitted item from their shop, and yes, it’s purple and looks wonderfully warm!
