Illusion (Shadow) Knitting – FREE PATTERN

NOTE: When first published there was an error at Row 32 of the pattern, this post has been edited and reflects the correct pattern.  *A Chart is also available, if you would prefer.  Please contact us here to have one -e-mailed to you for free.

Good Morning,

Wednesday’s posts are usually devoted to new goings on in the studio or the shop.  We will save that for Friday this week I think.

I was asked recently if I know how to create and write a pattern?  In other words, Do I really know what I am doing?  Well, yes, yes, I do.

Although I wrote this pattern a couple of years ago, it may still be knit with the same results.  Featured on The Leaky Cauldron , Harry Potter Crafts, (gallery photo, site is currently under going changes and Tutorial / Instruction are unavailable), it is an easy pattern to follow.

The finished product creates an illusion.  When viewed straight on the piece appears to be striped, when viewed at an angle a picture appears.

Illusion knitting is easier than it looks.

Pattern Instructions are below:

I used Caron Simply Soft 100% Acrylic Worsted Weight (4) in Dark Country Blue and Heather Grey for the colors, like the movie. I changed it to banner or wall hanging. It is about 18-1/2″ long from end to end fringe adds about 3″ to 6″ to over all length (depending on fringe length).

A few notes about the pattern:

The instructions below are for the WRONG SIDE of the pattern only. The RIGHT SIDE is KNIT every row! Just knit nothing else. I did say KNIT the RIGHT SIDE, right?

Ravenclaw Illusion (Shadow) Banner

Approx: 18-1/2″ (23-1/2″ with fringe)

Materials: Caron Simply Soft 100% Acrylic in Dark Country Blue [MC] and Grey Heather [CC] (no dye lot), 1 skein each (about 315 yards). You may choose any worsted weight yarn in the color of your choice.

Needles: Size 6 (US) straight

Gauge: is about 22 sts and 36 rows = 4″, or about 6-1/2 (7) sts. per inch.

NOTES: Two rows of each color are worked and then changed for the next two rows so on and so forth, continue in this manner for the entire project. Carry the colors loosely up the side at each color change, no one will ever notice. Instructions are written for the wrong side only, KNIT every right side (odd numbered) row.

It takes four rows of knitting to complete one row of pattern, the first row is establishing the illusion [CC] the next rows follow the illusion in reverse [MC] making the stitches “pop” out from the material.

The first and last 2 stitches of pattern are a selvage edge to help the piece lay flat and not roll. Light blocking will help if your banner rolls too much.

The design (illusion) is a total of 150 rows, counting the beginning border and end Bind Off rows. The photo is a mirror image, your bird will face the opposite direction when completed.  (New Photos have been provided).

Abbreviations:

K = Knit
P = Purl
MC = Main Color
CC = Contrast Color
sts. = stitches

Pattern:

CO 35 sts. in MC
Row 1 KNIT
Row 2 PURL
Change to CC

Fringe

Cut 14 12″ inch pieces of MC and 13 12″ pieces CC divide into our groups of three, using two strands of MC and 1 strand of CC for middle fringe piece. Find the center bottom of your banner and attach the blue/grey fringe there, alternate the other eight sections and space them equally along the bottom of the banner.

Hang it on your wall, your all done!

NOTE 2:  If desired you may continue in Stockinette Stitch, working the stripe pattern until it is the desired length, you may then follow the instructions from row 136 through row 1 (knit it upside down) and have the image on the opposite side creating a scarf.  You may also continue in the stripe pattern until the piece is 18″ shorter than you would like.  Work the Illusion piece and Kitchner stitch or join the pieces together.  Whichever your preferred method the scarf will be stunning in the end.

A little validation or verification… This pattern was originally posted on my knitting blog “Arachknits” (the blog is no longer in use, but the link and pattern are still there.

 Crafty Witch Joséesaid…
Hi A….!
First, let me say I’m sorry to post a comment on your blog like this. I generally prefer to e-mail people, but as I couldn’t find any other means of contacting you, here I am, posting on your blog 🙂

I am writing to you because I’m a crafty witch for The Leaky Cauldron, working in the Harry Potter Crafts section, which you can see here: http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/features/crafts.

As you can see, we are posting tutorials and pictures for all sorts of Harry Potter Crafts there, and I was wondering if you would allow us to post the Ravenclaw illusion banner pictures and tutorial posted above. We would also love to post the pictures for the knitted Hedwig (pattern from Charmed Knits). We would identify the pictures and pattern as coming from you . There is also a disclaimer in each of the tutorials, as well as 2 long paragraphs on the front page of the crafts section explaining visitors that they should use the patterns they see on the website for their personal use and not to sell them, as the designers are the only ones who own the copyrights and rights to those items. There is also a copyright sign right by the author’s name on the page of a particular item. Last but not least, you will notice that the credits at the bottom of each crafts mentions a source, so in your case, it would say that your tutorial was taken with permission from Arachknits and we would include a direct link to the place where the tutorial can be found on your site.

The Leaky Cauldron easily gets between 70,000 and 1,000,000 hits per month. I believe letting us add your patterns and pictures there would increase your visibility too. And of course, it would enable thousands of crafters all around the world to make wonderful crafts like yours!
Hoping to post your creations soon!

Josée Leblanc
Leaky Cauldron Crafty Witch

P.S.: We would appreciate it if you could reply to us (whether you’re interested or not) by e-mail at crafts@the-leaky-cauldron.org, as we crafty witches figure out our to-do list from the conversations in our e-mail account. Also be sure to include a link to your charts in the message, otherwise the other crafty witches may not know which pattern you are referring to! Thanks!

**Please be aware this pattern is the property of and belongs to Alixandra Browning of The Alchemists Vessel (Arachknits Blog) and may no be reproduced for sale by any means whether knitting it yourself or printing and selling the pattern.  That is not allowed.

If you would like assistance with creating your own Illusion / Shadow Pattern we can help Chart and Write it for you.

Thank you for stopping by and having a look.  In hope that Knitting Fever has struck and you are off to seek out yarn and needles.

The Alchemists Vessel would like to wish you a pleasant day.

Additional Photos:

Chart – if you look closely you can see the eagle.

Reverse side, concerned your image isn’t coming out correctly?  Flip your knitting over and check.

When viewed from an angle the raised stitches “pop” creating the “illusion” of the eagle.

Fair Isle and Faux Finds

Good Morning,

Happy Monday, I hope that all had a restful and relaxing weekend and are ready to get back to work and be constructive and productive.

This weekend at Little Shop of Artists, we demonstrated Fair Ilse Knitting, an Intermediate Knitting Technique,  and set some new items on the shelves.  Talented and crafty, our resident staff person, Alixandra, worked up a length of a lovely Wintery style Fair Isle Knitting sample in Snowflakes and Bordered Inset Diamonds.

Knit with Caron Simply Soft 100% Acrylic in Deep Plum Heather and Plum Heather, 4 (Worsted weight) Gauge = 18 sts. and 24 rows = 4 inches square on Size 8 (US) 5.0mm.
Project – Size 9 (US) 5.5mm Needles
Gauge – 6 sts. = 1″

Detail of Snowflake pattern.

Fair Isle knitting is a method of “stranding” color as you knit.  Unlike stripes that are knit back and forth row by row, one color at a time, stranding uses two (or more colors in some cases) in the same row, creating a picture / pattern when complete.  As each stitch is knit in its specific color, the color not in use is carried across the knitting by “floating” the unused yarn along the back of the work until it is needed to form the designated stitch.  Many Fair Isle patterns are written in charts as you see below.

Here the white squares represent the background or main color used through out the project.  The blue squares indicate when the new color will be used to begin the contrasting color pattern.  Fair Isle is not only beautiful when finished it is also fun to do!

When complete the sample above will serve as a Winter Scarf.

New Items on the shelves.  These simple little wood boxes are painted by hand using a variety of materials and tools to create unique and interesting faux finishes.  The box below looks like it may have been carved from a hunk of Jasper or perhaps an agate of sorts.

The shop is still looking for participating Artists.  Come on in, bring a sample or two, let’s see what you have, and if we can make room for you on a shelf.

Shoe Ins: Ceramics, Paintings, Glass-works, Woodwork, Fine Art, Textiles (Knitting, Crochet, Tie-Dye) etc… If you made it we’ll make every effort to find a display area for it.

Thank you for stopping in and having a look.

The Alchemists Vessel would like to wish you a pleasant day.

News of the Shop – Arrangement and Photos

Happy Monday,

I hope one and all had a relaxing and restful weekend.  I spent the weekend in the shop, working, which is fun and not so fun all at the same time.

Assistance is never to be balked at, and I certainly appreciate it when it is available.  Holding things and making sure things are level and what not from a distance is most useful, because then I do not have to do things twice.

There are more shelves up, which makes more room for more artists to come and display their wares I am thrilled with the way things are coming together and an am looking forward to expanding the items on display as well as our customer base.

Once we have things a little more organized and our participating artists are settled, Tuesday and Wednesday will be devoted to classes, Knitting, Jewelry, including Chain Maille (taught by Alixandra Browning), and Wire Wrapping (taught by Sarah Shannon of Wire Witchery) or other craft projects may be taught.  Our Schedule of Classes may be found by visiting the website www.littleshopofartists.com.

If you’re are artist and would like to display your wares we have plenty of space to do so and are happy to work with you to accommodate your items, whether it be a table of your own or shelf space we can certainly find a place for your works of art in any style.  Textiles, Clothing, Accessories, Sculpture, Paintings, Photography, we would like to share and display it all.  Rental fee applies.

Random Wanderings

Good Morning,

Happy Friday one and all.

Today the blog is brief with a quick update on the store, our schedule, and weekend festivities here in Boise.

The Shop is closed today, meeting with another artist in Meridian, a little town just outside of Boise, about thirty minutes up the road.  We we also be taking measurements today and running errands to purchase those things I am missing n order to complete the shelf installation at the shop.

Little Shop of Artists is locally owned and operated, everything in the store is handmade and crafted here in Idaho by talented artisans from all walks of life.  Why buy something off the rack when you can find unique beautiful and amazing things right in your own backyard, well down the block from your own backyard…  We are located at 6713 Fairview Avenue, Suite B, Boise ID, behind A-1 Video Game Exchange.

Also this weekend is the Boise Music Festival.

From 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. at Idaho Expo (that’s the Fair Grounds).

I can’t really suggest this as an outing for many reasons, but if you’re looking for some fun in the sun it is something to do.  If you’re going stop by The Delphi Oracles Booth and have your Palm or Cards read.

Thank you for stopping in and having a look.

The Alchemists Vessel would like to wish you a pleasant weekend.

Handmade Artists Artists

Good Morning,

Since this past weekend was Easter, the Blog Ring took a little break to allow people to be unwind and be with family and friends for the Holiday.

No shop in particular is featured this week, I just thought it would be fun to take a peek at some of the new artists and a couple of new items from some of my favorite shops.

From Yankee Burrow Creations

What can I say, I just love Teddy Bears, and these are so cute and what a wonderful gift and so full of love.

these big sister teddy bears celebrate the love between sisters.  The big sister bear is white and measures 9 1/2″ tall, and little sister bear is red and measures only 9″ tall.  The eyes and noses of both bears are sewn on, and they sport matching but coordinating scarfs with bright yellow trim.  These would be a nice gift for your sister, big or small.  You can read the full story behind these bears here on my blog, http://www.yankeeburrowcreations.com/2013/03/celebrate-your-sisters.html

Product Details:
My newest painting in the Australian animal series. Its of two sweet pink and grey galah’s sitting amongst the flowers in the Eucalypt tree. It comes as an 8.5 x 12 inch print with a thin white border surrounding the image. A lovely addition to a country kitchen or for those who love birds!
Please note that colours may vary slightly from what you see on your monitor due to different monitor settings.

All my artwork is printed on archival quality Hahnemuehle Fine Art Paper 310-350gsm with a lovely texture that resembles the watercolour paper the original was painted on. It is printed using archival quality Lucia pigment inks on a Canon IPF5100 printer ensuring very rich and sharp prints.

Each print is signed, dated and titled on the back. Watermark will not appear on your print.

Your print will be shipped in a protective cellophane sleeve between cardboard or in a rigid mailer to ensure safe delivery of your print.
