Hairstyles for 2014

Good Morning,

Today I thought it would be fun to take a look at one of our more chameleon-like accessories, our hair.

I have worn my hair in the same style since about 1985, after it finally grew out from a dye / perm job that went horrible awry.  I have it trimmed to keep it tidy, but I am not one for hair cuts.

Besides our clothes and outfits, and finding that perfect bracelet or cute pair of earrings that we just love that goes well with out wardrobe, our coif is just about the most important accessory we have.

This years styles for both young ladies and women over 40 is the cropped Bob.

Or a sleek and sophisticated A-Symmetrical frame about the face, as worn by Kira Knightly.

And ladies, please do not do this.  You are not a rooster, this is just atrocious, and looks like you’ve been attacked by an angry horde of Flow-Bees.  Just no.

How to tame those tresses and keep the stray strands out of your face this season? Hair Bands (or “Hair Jewelry”) is all the rage, as well big bows are back in, and you can never go wrong with a pretty scarf tied up in those love locks.

In The Studio: Opening a Physical Location

It has been a long-time dream of mine to open and operate my own store.  The idea of the store has morphed from form or another, but always staying within the same vein or theme of handmade art and gifts.

Many of you may be thinking, “Wow, that is so exciting”, and it is.  It is also a lot of hard work, time and effort.  There are several other vendors at the Handmade Artists Forum that also have brick and mortar shops, and can tell you it is no easy task keeping one up and running.

I thought it might be fun to share some of the things that go on during the process of establishing a brick and mortar store.

1.  A location, that is essential.  Some questions to ask yourself, What is the rent?  What is the square footage?  Where is it located?  Do I have enough items to fill it?  What kind of store do I want it to be?  Are there displays?  What do I need to provide?  Who will work in the store?  How do I or they get paid?  The most important

question to ask yourself should be, Is it within the budget?

2.  Registering Your Business Name:  Here in Idaho, businesses are not licensed they are registered with the Secretary of State for an affordable fee of $25.00 per name.  This is called an IBR or Idaho Business Registration form.  This registration allows you to “Do Business As (DBA) the name you have chosen for your business, and is usually issued and attached to the applicants social security number.  Your home state’s rules and regulations may vary.

3. Tax or Seller’s Permit: This is a number assigned to a slip of paper (permit) that reads with your name, your business name (also called a DBA), and other pertinent information.  The State of Idaho requires these permits to be placed in a visible area in the location in which you are selling your goods.  It must also have the phyiscal address of where the goods are located for sale.  In some cases, like myself, two permits are required, one for the origin of business (my home), and the other for the location from which the wares are sold.  This is also how Sales Tax is collected and reported to the State of Idaho.  These are issued at no charge, and as many copies may be issued as you have locations.

4.  Advertising and Draw:  Here in Boise, as in most cities, there is a public radio station that runs entirely on donations and is operated by volunteer D.J.s, KBRX.  They have amazing programming and run fund raising events from time to time, as well as offer promotion for donations.  This is a fabulous way to support an other local business, and get the word out that you are open for business as well.   Local papers will on occasion run a free press release for new businesses.  Check your local agencies to see what you can do to get the word out for your own store or event!

5.  Move In and Open Dates:  When you will move in?  When you will be prepared or set to open?  It is my hope to have one or two, perhaps three vendors a day move into the shop, spaced over a couple hours so all will feel as if they have the time and attention they need to be comfortable and confident in their displays.  I am expecting or would like to announce the opening of the doors on or around July 15th, 2013.   I have given myself two weeks for move in and disaster cushions.

That being said, I am looking forward to maintaining my shops on line, as well as having a physical location to visit and from which to promote other talented artists at a single venue.

I am so excited about this new venture, in hope some of you will join me in my happy nervousness.

U.S. Size 8-1/4. This fabulous bright blue glass cabochon organic shaped statement ring is one of a kind. Crafted from recycled materials, found or neglected items, that with much love and little attention were up-cycled into this beautiful and unique ring. Would make a great Cocktail ring, a terrific piece for dancing in the club or some flashy sparkle as you rock the night away on stage.

Definitely looks hand made, the shape of the stone has dictated the formation of the bezel, soft edges and waves accent the cabochon’s shape well. An elegant ring with a very primitive appeal.

Hand forged from start to finish. The Sterling Silver shank was cleaned and the damaged metal removed. The metal was annealed (heated), re-shaped on a mandrel, sized, sanded, and soldered to the bezel back. Finishing touches include polishing.

The Fine Silver bezel is also repaired and up-cycled Empty of a stone, the missing stone has been replaced with a lovely glass cabochon that fit the setting nicely. Split along the seam, it has been soldered, sanded, cleaned and formed around the glass cabochon, which just happened to fit the bezel cup.

The glass cabochon has bubbles and inclusions inside the piece itself. These may be seen in the photos, although not immediately visible when worn, they add a nice natural look to the ring.

Cabochons and Faceted Stones

Good Morning,

Today’s blog is very brief, as I am in the middle of a project that must be done.

Jewelry making consists of many steps, parts, pieces, and time.  One of the most important parts or pieces of jewelry-making are the gemstones.  There are two basic kinds of cuts for these stones,  cabochon or a faceted gemstone.

Cabochons are usually cut from opaque stones like Onyx, Agate, and Malachite.  Cabochons have a flat back and a curved (convex) or domed top, there are names for the different surfaces of the stone as well.

Cabochon ~  Mossy Agate, cut, shaped and polished by Rasmussen Gems and Jewellery, LLC.  This stone was cut especially for me for the project I am working on.

Faceted stones are usually crafted from crystalline stones, such as Ruby, Emerald, and Diamonds.  The different surfaces of the stone allow light to pass through the different angles of the surface showing off the beauty of the stone.

Surfaces of the stone are taken into account from the table to the culet (top to bottom).

The girdle of the stone is usually placed in the setting for a nice balanced look.

What is Mohs Scale?

Mohs Scale refers to the hardness of the stone. Numbered 1 though 10 stones are assigned a number based on how hard the surface of the stone is, Talc being the softest at 1 and of course Diamond being the hardest of the stones at 10.  Most stones used for jewelery fall somewhere between 3 and 7 on the scale.

Caught Couture

Hello there,

Monday has arrived, bright and shiny here in lovely Boise, Idaho.  

Today I would like to share a new piece.  I try, on occasion to bring a sense of whimsy and fun into the pieces I create, and once in a while I find something unique and unusual that fits the description nicely.  The creative process being what it is, I do not always have an immediate use or idea for the odds and ends I tend to acquire.  They may sit around for months until inspiration strikes and the appropriate design is crafted.

This piece took a while, it fought me here and there, insisting that something wasn’t quite right.  So back to the drawing board or bead board as it was… It was while watching an old movie on TV that the idea sprang into my head, and almost demanded that I stop what I was doing to sit at the workbench and work on the piece.  Thankfully I am not so flighty.

Caught Couture

A play on the words Haute Couture (an item made especially with a specific theme, fit or design, made to order) it is designed as a Lariat, handcuffs, star and key charms adorn one end and maybe centered as a pendant, a second pair of handcuffs is attached to the other end of the chain, and acts as a stop.  This necklace has no clasp and fits easily over the head.  Over all length is 27″, and may be worn two different ways.

Cluster the charms all together and let the necklace hang just below the breast (very Victorian), or adjust by gently pull the handcuffs in a downward motion, repositioning the pendant as a collar with a long lead or to desired length for a tiered look.

Created with antiqued bronze chain and charms, the handcuffs do not open.  The star and key lend a law enforcement theme to this cute necklace.  Would make a great accessory those in the branches of Law Enforcement.
