The Midas Touch

Good Morning,

You have heard the story of King Midas, the unfortunate man that could turn everything he touched in to gold, including his food, his clothes, his daughter.  That’s right, anything he touched instantly became gold.

Here at The Alchemists Vessel we aren’t blessed with such a curse, but as our namesakes once attempted, we like to turn things in to gold, or perhaps more appropriately turn gold into things.

Monday we had a brief showcase of some of the new materials now available through the shop.  Anxious and excited to try the wire and rings out, I sat down for a bit of weaving, and I must admit the fun of playing with new items had me a bit distracted.

A small sampling of yesterday’s play.
Due to skipping from one weave to the next, I neglected to notice and correct a couple of migrating rings here and there and will of course take the time to fix the errant part before continuing with the piece.

What’s New in The Studio – Wire / Jump Ring Selections

Good Morning,

This weekend I spent time with the supply catalogs and would like to share some of the new materials that will be available for custom work and favorite designs.

Silver, Sterling Silver and Copper are my preferred metals of choice, but gold is requested more often than not.  We have added several sizes of manufactured rings and new wires to our inventory.

Gold (14K) Jump Rings

Now available in several sizes, these pretty rings will be used in a variety of items, including but not limited to our Chainmaille Selection of jewelry.  Look for new items soon, or ask us about a custom design order made especially for you.

Aluminum Rings:

These lovely rings also come in a variety of sizes and have been purchased specifically for Dragonscale Maille pattern bracelets.  Currently available in three colors Red, Black and Gold (Yellow), we will be adding more colors to our selection soon.  Shown here in Red.

Stainless Steel Rings:

We have also added Stainless Steel to our selection of wire / jump rings.  Silver in color, stainless steel is great for those that may have metal sensitivities or want a piece that can stand up to heavier wear and tear than the precious metals.  They also make great masculine designs.

A word about Gold:

Gold: All gold jewelry is plated, usually over copper or brass.  Gold is too soft to use for much of anything unless it is mixed or layered over another base metal.  “Rose Gold” is a blend of Gold and Copper, adding the copper creates that pretty red tone in the gold.  Most Gold jewelry is plated at 18K or 14K.  This means that the piece of jewelry is 75 to 58.5% Gold and 25 to 41.5% base metal.  Our jump rings are listed as 14K over brass.  Our gold wire is filled over brass.

Filled vs. Plated:  What does this mean?

Filled wire in gold or silver is simply a denser plate of gold over the base metal.  Plated wire is usually about .15mm of precious metal over a base metal wire (like a sheath),  Filled is usually .25mm of precious metal over a base metal core.

(Picture taken from the internet).

Thank you for stopping by and having a look.  We hope you will stop by again and see what we have made with these new supply items.

The Alchemists Vessel would like to wish you a pleasant day.

Featured Artist ~ The Kitchen’s Wares

Good Morning,

Today it is my pleasure to once again showcase the dynamic duo, Andrew and Kimberley Kitchen.  This wonderful couple not only own and operate handmadeartists.com, they are also shop owners; and on top of that, they also run the site It’s Better Handmade.  You may click through from the Badge to the left or follow the links at the end of this post.

The theme for today’s feature is Spring, and not just the season, we  have things that are wound like springs, look like springs, things that evoke Spring and the feelings of cool breezes, fresh cut grass and blooming flowers.

Let’s begin with some of the wares from their shop ~

Makin the Best of It

They carry gorgeous wire wrapped sea glass pendants and some wonderful and inspired original artwork, including Painted Glassware and Re-purposed books from the hands of Kimberley Kitchen.

In keeping with the theme of Spring, we have this pretty wire wrapped pendant, the coil or spring, wraps around the stone ending in a lovely bale for attaching to your own chain.

Product Details:

This little treasure began life as a blue, glass bottle that was tossed into the ocean many years ago.  Broken up by waves and sanded smooth by years of rolling water and sand, it eventually landed on the beach in New Jersey to begin its new life as wearable art!
This piece measures 2 inches (5 cm) from the top of the bail to the bottom of the sterling silver coil and approximately 1/2 inch across the width.  The coiled cage holds the glass securly and has been hand wrapped in sterling silver wire.
This piece comes ready to wear on an 18 inch, sterling silver chain held secure with a sterling silver spring clasp.  If you would like a longer or shorter chain, just let me know upon checkout and I will happily adjust it for you.

I am always on the search for new Sea Glass (Beach Glass) pieces to create wearable art with, so keep checking back for new pieces to add to your collection.  Because of the nature of sea glass, each piece will always be one of a kind.

Spring brings newlife, and what says new life better than new leaves on plants and trees.  This beautiful Sterling Silver leafy branch is decorated with fresh green sea glass and a contrasting white piece, perhaps meant to resemble an apple blossom.

Product Details:

This darling necklace features a hand soldered branch and leaves of sterling silver and shades of green and white sea glass on a sterling silver chain.
While this piece looks like a short lariat, the glass will not pull through the final leaf.  The sterling silver chain is clasped with a sterling spring clasp.
This piece was created to wear high on the neckline at between 16-18 inches.  If you would prefer a longer chain with a lower drop, just let me know and I will be more than happy to change out the chain for you.  If you would like a similar design with different colors of glass, I can do that for you also.
What is sea glass?  Sea glass or beach glass began life as trashed bottles and broken windows dumped into the ocean.  The action of the sand and waves soften the broken edges and frost the glass before it is washed ashore to be found and given a new life.  Each piece of sea glass I use was hand picked off the New Jersey shore and then carefully made into wearable art.

I have always been fascinated with the inner working of clocks and machines, spring driven mechanisms that can tell time, create movement in a puppet or simply act as an artistic centerpiece.   This would make a great decoration for any Steampunk style room or decor.

Sometimes art speaks to one in a different way. This altered art piece is my interpretation of the novel Clockwork Orange. The book was cut and highlighted with an old clock face, spring, dial and gears before being set into a 6×8, black shadow box frame. Because of the nature of this type of art, each piece is definitely one of a kind…I mean, I can only hack up a book one time and it is gone! This piece can be used in any decor. I am working on a number of other novels so check back often and see how I see some of the classic novels.

New Chainmaille Bracelets in the Shop

Good Morning,

I am excited and very pleased to share two new items in the shop.  I have also listed them on etsy, thought we’d give that site another go.

I have been working on this bracelet for quite some time, I ran out of rings, then I ran out of wire, and finally after placing an order for additional material I have finished the single color Dragonscale Chainmaille bracelet.

Moonlit Dragon

What makes this bracelet different?  This pattern is usually woven with multicolored rings to show off the scale-like chain, using a single color lends a unique look to this pretty piece.

The neat thing is this really does resemble scales.

I admit it, I have been a bit of a fan-girl of late, with the popularity of Game of Thrones among other series out now, I find myself in good company.  So the Fan Fashion continues with this cool Captured Ring Inverted Round Maille bracelet.

Tardis Blues

Silver-plated rings and Anodized Aluminum combine to complete this lovely and fun bracelet.  There is a puzzle here as well.  How do those rings just float there like that?  Worthy of any companion, and just the right shade of blue.

Available in a variety of colors or may be made in solid color silver or gold tone wires.  Great for team, school or group colors.  Wallenberg Bulldogs, I’m talking to you!

From different angles this piece looks a little different, the addition of an accent color adds another dimension to the piece. It reminds me of a honeycomb of sorts.

Available in Red, Pink, Olive Green, Teal, Purple and Black.

We would like to remind the reader, that although this is Chainmaille and traditionally used for armor or protective clothing, these item are meant for personal decoration only.  They will not protect you from projectiles or weapons of any kind, this includes and is not limited to, bullets, knives, swords, darts, slings, arrows, sticks, stones, ballpoint pens, snowballs and thoughtless words.

Thank you for stopping in and having a read.

The Alchemist Vessel would like to wish you a pleasant day.

In The Studio – Malachite Earrings and Dragonscale

Good Morning,

Friday’s are usually open for promotions and things that are happening around Boise.  Since it is Easter this weekend, and some festivites have been cancelled, there isn’t much to promote.  So today’s blog is short, and showcases two items currently being worked on in the studio.

Malachite and Sterling Silver Earrings.

These have not yet been listed for sale and I am not sure I am going to list them.  Large malachite oval cabochons have been set in Sterling Silver and are made for Pierced ears.   The materials were pre-cut and measured, and given to me as part of a job interview / skill assessment.  They measure 1″ x 1/2″.

This piece is not finished yet, and I am still in the process of deciding what to do with it.  At this length it would make half of a watch band, or I could continue for a full bracelet.  My concern is the weight,  silver plate over brass, makes for a dense and heavy piece.  Using 5mm and 3mm ID rings, makes for a pretty but weighty item.

Top down, the rings are stretched to their limit, to show the scale like pattern.

From different angles the piece has a different appearance, one of my favorite things about the weave.

The rings create a lovely and smooth chain, although it looks like it would be rough to the touch, it is actually very silky.

Viewed from the side the rings appear to Cris-cross, making a pretty X like pattern along the chain’s edge.

The Cris-cross moves in the other direction on the other side.  Dragonscale is an intricate and beautiful weave, done in multiple or single colors, it is a conversation starter as well as a durable and functional weave.

Thank you for stopping by and having a look.

The Alchemists Vessel would like to wish you a pleasant day and a Happy Easter.

In My Studio – A Weave and Whatnots

Good Morning,

As the end of the year nears, the blog will be winding down as well.  A gentle reminder The Alchemists Vessel will be closed for the Christmas and New Year Holidays.

If you read Monday’s blog post, you saw the sample of the Large size Dragonscale Bracelet I have been working on.  I love this weave, beautiful and deceptive in its intricacy, once you have the basic pattern down it is a fairly simple and very fun weave.

I thought I would show off the finished product.  This is mine, I made it for me.

Dragonscale in Aluminum, silver, aqua and purple rings.  Although made from aluminum, this piece does have some weight, about 188 to 200 rings complete the piece.

Finished with a bar clasp that came with the rings, in a just smidge too short size, it still works wonderfully.

Surprising supple for its interlocking pattern, it feels absolutely amazing when worn.  Smooth and silky, it slithers across the skin, sensual and serpentine.  Strong, sturdy and a sensational conversation starter, perfect for a subtle pop of color at the office, or to brighten up that favorite pair of jeans, date night, girls day out, this will go with everything in your closet!  Fits any fashion style, Rocker, Goth, Biker, Steam-punk, Hipster; and as an added bonus girly-girls can have them made in pink!  Bracelets will be available in pre-made color combinations or custom colors of the customer’s choice.  These take a while to weave, unless a pre-made piece is selected expect at least a week turn around time, to create, package and ship your bracelet to you.

Slinky, shiny, stunning and mine!

How to order a Dragonscale Bracelet: Anodized and Natural (Silver) Aluminum only.

1. Choose your colors –   Select two to three colors for your bracelet from the chart below.

2. Measure your wrist, allow the tape measure or string about a 1/4″ or finger width slack.  An average bracelet measures 7-1/4″ and should fit most wrists.  Include your wrist circumference in inches, for a secure and custom fit.

3. Decide on a color scheme, how do you want your colors placed, or choose “Free Reign” and allow The Alchemists Vessel to arrange your colors for you.

Pre-made color combinations or custom request bracelets are $50.00.
Wristwatches $55.00
Wristband replacement / change out $40.00

Mini Dragon Scale, due to the size and number of rings it takes to weave this pattern (300 or more) in a smaller version, custom orders will be required.
Bracelets – $65.00

*Precious Metal is available upon request, serious inquires only, please.  May be made in the materials listed, any alteration or substitution will be discussed on a per order basis.  A 50% non-refundable deposit is required before any Precious Metal custom order beings.

Large:
Sterling Silver:  $500.00
Sterling Silver / Niobium Blend: $375.00

Mini:
Sterling Silver: $350.00
Sterling Silver and Niobium Rings: $360.00
Silver and Gold Filled: $475.00

Two color, alternating rows with silver aluminum outer rings.

The Chart below shows three color combinations, “Samug”, “Keir’s Dragon” and “Sample”, the sample is the palette for the bracelet shown above.  Keir’s Dragon also has a pattern incorporated into it, the colors represent the smaller colored rings only.

Each line of color represents two or three jump rings as they are placed in the weave.  Reading the scheme for “Smaug” we see, two gold rings, three orange rings, two yellow rings, and three Red rings, the pattern skips and changes colors around for a different sequence every two rows.

*Jump Ring Color Chart copy and pasted from the internet.

Please feel free to leave a comment, suggestion or question.  You can always e-mail us or check us out at any of the links below and inquire about your very own dragonscale bracelet.
