Featured Artists – Shop Schedule and News

Good Morning,

Today we feature Little Shop of Artists schedule for next week and a planned class or two, but first a little news.

We are a happy family at Little Shop of Artists and this weekend one of our own is busy preparing for her son’s wedding.  We would like to wish the new couple joy, prosperity and luck on their adventure to the new phase of their lives.  Congratulations!

As many of you may know I have had a medical emergency this week.  The dentist is never fun, and worse when the thing you went in for turns in to five more issues.  Great, sir!  This has kept the shop closed as there is currently only one employee, me.  We will return to our regular schedule Saturday, August 10, 2013, we will be open and as follows.

During the Summer our hours are as follows.  We take appointments, make special arrangements and can even schedule a private sitting if you choose.

Saturday 10 – 6
Sunday 12 – 6
Monday – Although this is our usual weekend day, we may open.
Tuesday – See Monday
Wednesday – We are usually open from 10 – 6 or by Appointment.
Thursday and Friday – 10 – 6

**NOTE: This week I have an appointment with another local business owner and depending on when they are available the shop will be closed that day while I am at my meeting.

As back to school approaches, and the holidays near our schedule will change to accommodate that as well.

Classes: Instruction happens during normal hours of operation at the shop.  We teach lots of crafts and are versed in many different techniques. Classes are about 2 hours to 2-1/2 hours long and the attendees go home with something they made themselves or a new skill.  Materials may be provided by the shop or the attendee may bring their own supplies and materials to work with depending on the lesson.  We offer Individual, Group, Organization or Party Lessons.

Available Lessons:
Beginner Classes – Crochet, Knitting, *Jewelry Design / Assembly
* Learn a variety of techniques from basic stringing to **wire wrapping and chain maille.
**Wire Wrapping is taught per project exclusively by Sarah Shannon of Wire Witchery.
Chain Maille is taught per weave / project exclusively by Alixandra Browning of The Alchemists Vessel and Blackbird Metalworks.

We also teach intermediate to advanced classes and can help you with that pesky project.

We offer services that range from Custom Design to Private Photography Sittings and Up-cycling or light repair of your current jewelry pieces.

The shop is always evolving and we hope to have a new artist or two join us here shortly, as well as an end of Summer event that is currently in the planning stages.  More on that soon.

Linkapolooza 2 – Social Media Sites

Good Morning,

Today we deviate a little and change up the day’s Featured Artist with places where you can feature your own art or others or your site, band, brand, or what have you.  Many of these may be found to the right, click on the icon or button to check them out.

rebelmouse – This is a cool one stop, sign up and forget it site.  Rather like Pintrest, it is a page of just the things you choose to have post on the site.  The great thing about rebelmouse is that you can connect it to all your favorite Facebook pages, as well as Twitter, Linkedin, Instagram, Google +, Flickr and others.  Post on a Facebook page, and it automatically posts to your rebelmouse page.  Tweeted something did you?  It will post automatically to your rebelmouse page.  You don’t have to click OK or do anything else, post it once and rebelmouse will take care of the rest.  It is also free, and yes they have paid upgrades, too.

Twitter– I know I don’t have to explain Twitter.  For the longest time I refused to have an account, I thought it was silly. However as a marketing tool, it does have its perks.  Short snippets of information can be sent out and reach your market quickly.  Made something new, having a sale, want to share a new venture?  A short sentence and a hash-tag # topic or a directed tweet @ someone, you can reach a whole new audience.  You may also tweet pictures and videos.  Quick simple way to advertize your art, services, sales, brand, music, or whatever.

linkedin:   Since I first joined, they have changed the way they do things on the site.  Not a bad site, but there is little interaction unless someone wants to connect with you and grow their “Professional Network”.  Linked in used to connect directly to a blog or page, they no longer offer that and instead want you to go post over there.  However, they have made it possible to post pictures, upgrade your projects, and get connected with more people, if you are into social networking, there are groups available to join, and tailored to your specific profession.

Maven: Is a professional consultations and networking site.  The idea here is to get connected with other professionals, as well as connect with people that might be looking for services.  You may click this link http://www.maven.co/join/HhnkQNkF and check it out for yourselves.  Their pages make more sense than any brief explanation I try here.

New Things and DIY Fun

Good Morning,

Due to unforeseen circumstances, like dental emergencies, Little Shop of Artists is closed today.  We will be open Thursday through Sunday!  Stop by and check out the new items in the shop, including hand-painted trinket boxes.

These simple, fun and cute little wood boxes lend themselves to any number of uses.  I found mine at an art supply store.

Materials:

Wood Box – 1
Paint Brush – 1 (Medium sized flat bristle for good coverage)
Sea Sponge / Stippler / Foam Headed Pouncer – pick one or use all
Two (2) Colors of Acryalic Paint (Artists Choice) – Three is a good maximum, don’t want your box getting “muddy”.
Water
Paper Towels (dry your brushes or remove excess paint)
News Paper (protect your work surface)
Gloss-Luster Finish Mod-Podge – Sealant
Sandpaper (Optional) – Recommended if the wood is rough.

First find a box, any box will do.  Round, square, oval, hinged, not hinged, lid or no lid.  It should be wood or other paint-able surface.

If the surface of the box feels rough, sand it lightly with 120 Grit or higher sandpaper until it feels smoother beneath your finger.  Remember to sand with the grain of the wood.

I highly recommend using a base or sealer first.  I used Gesso, a product used to prepare the surface of canvas (in this case wood) for acrylic paint.

Welcome to the Studio or “The Dungeon” as my Mom likes to call it.  Pardon the mess, but I really do work here!

Using a brush, I painted the outside of the lid and sides of the box with a light coat of Gesso.

Next (and this is the fun part, it is messy, too, I love that!)

Choose a base color ( I chose black for this box) and with a Sea Sponge, “Stippler”, or Foam Tiped “Pouncer” – Dab, daub, dot, blot, pounce, press, push, shmush and down right smash that chosen tool all over the box, until you have covered the surface and it is a pattern you like.

Remember to work quickly. Do not over wet the sponge or other tool, use just enough water to get the paint is moving. (Use news paper to protect your work surface).

Allow to dry thoroughly. Acrylic paint dries fairly fast, allow about ten to fifteen minutes in between coats, or touch test, if it is still tacky (sticky) to the touch allow it to dry a little more.

With your second color (I chose Crimson), fill your tool and go over the surface of your box until it is covered or it has the desired effect or pattern you like.

Allow you box to dry once again.

Last step, I recommend NOT skipping this, it not only seals the wood, but will help protect your pretty art work.

Using a clean brush, paint the exterior of the box with a light coat of Mod-Podge in Gloss-Lustre Finish. Allowing the box to dry thoroughly in between coats will assure no smudges or dragging of the paint will occur when finishing your box. Allow to dry one more time.

Your box, she is complete! You may if you so choose allow the box to dry and paint the bottom, or using a spray adhesive and a scrap piece of material adhere the material to the bottom of the box and cut it away until it is flush with the edges of the box. Line the inside with something if you like. Put your secret stash, treasure or basic stuff in your finished trinket box and tuck it on a shelf or a dresser or wherever might need a little a color in your world.

Thank you for stopping in and having a look. This box, and more are available at Little Shop of Artists.

The Alchemists Vessel would like to wish you a pleasant day.

A Little of This and A Little of That

Good Morning,

Friday is here, so is the weekend!  I will be back in the shop today through Sunday.  Come on down and say hello.

Yesterday I wanted to feature a friend and fellow artists Debbi and Amanda, a mother and daughter team of graphic design, crafting and vintage goodies.  To my dismay the shop on handmadeartists.com was empty.  GASP!  The horror!

She was kind enough to comment on the post and let me know that she has  moved her wonderful and lovely items to The Craft Star.
You may find her handmade and vintage pieces at: Yankee Burrow Creations.

Lilac beaded handbag shoulder purse

Loading...

Loading...Loading...Loading...
This soft purple handbag is a great fashion accessory for this summer months. Crocheted in a pattern I have had since the 80’s, I modified it by adding the front flap and shortening the strap. The plastic pony beads are worked into the crochet pattern, not sewn on, so there is no worry about the beads popping off from daily use. In fact, the bag I created way back then is still in use today. I added a nice fabric lining to this bag so you won’t have to worry about combs or pens or anything getting caught, or sticking out, while carrying this bag.

It measures 12 1/2″ wide and 10 1/2″ deep and is crocheted with Germantown worsted yarn – 100% pure virgin wool.

Handwash in lukewarm water and gentle soap, roll in a towel and then lay flat to dry.

Stop by and see what else is in her shop!

Not sure what is happening around town, but the Boise Weekly does.

Little Shop of Artists has a free on line only ad that runs through Next Wednesday for our classes.  Unfortunately, you can’t get there from the actual Boise Weekly Page, you must go to to classifieds.boiseweekly.com

    Little Shop of Artists Ad

Feel free to contact us with questions.

    Today in the shop:
    Pricing / Inventory
Knitting Demonstrations: Simple Scarf Stitch to Adding Stripes
Chain Maille Demonstrations: Micro Maille – Jens Pind Linkage and BSU Celtic Stars (Team Colors)
    Jewelry Design – Coif Chains
Photos – Yes sir, need more of those.

Got a question?   Need some help?  Project isn’t working?  We’re here to help!  Give us a call or come on down and bring your persnickety piece and we’ll see if we can’t get you back on track.

We are also still looking for participating artists.  Come on down, check out the store, have a little chat and let’s see what we can’t do to display and share your wares.

Thank you for stopping in and having a look.

The Alchemists Vessel would like to wish you a pleasant day.

Featured Artist – The Alchemists Vessel

    Good Morning,

Today we head back to the shop for demonstrations, class sign up, and hoping artists or customers will stop by to see the shop and what’s in the shelves.

The blog ring is on hiatus, and the shop I have wanted to feature must be doing an overhaul because the cupboard was bare.   However if you would like to check out a really neat blog with stories and other features try Yankee Burrow Creations.

This morning I feature some of my items now available on line at handmadeartists.com.  I love this site and must get more organized to find the time to return to the forum, and participate in all the wonderful things that the site has to offer.  So busy with new things I have fallen behind in the maintenance of others.

This mornings offerings are from The Alchemists Vessel shop at handmadeartists.com.  (Some of the items may also be found on Etsy).

U.S. Size 8-1/4. This fabulous bright blue glass cabochon organic shaped statement ring is one of a kind. Crafted from recycled materials, found or neglected items, that with much love and little attention were up-cycled into this beautiful and unique ring. Would make a great Cocktail ring, a terrific piece for dancing in the club or some flashy sparkle as you rock the night away on stage.

Definitely looks hand made, the shape of the stone has dictated the formation of the bezel, soft edges and waves accent the cabochon’s shape well. An elegant ring with a very primitive appeal.

Hand forged from start to finish. The Sterling Silver shank was cleaned and the damaged metal removed. The metal was annealed (heated), re-shaped on a mandrel, sized, sanded, and soldered to the bezel back. Finishing touches include polishing.

The Fine Silver bezel is also repaired and up-cycled Empty of a stone, the missing stone has been replaced with a lovely glass cabochon that fit the setting nicely. Split along the seam, it has been soldered, sanded, cleaned and formed around the glass cabochon, which just happened to fit the bezel cup.

The glass cabochon has bubbles and inclusions inside the piece itself. These may be seen in the photos, although not immediately visible when worn, they add a nice natural look to the ring.

In The Studio – New Item Dione / Pandora Style Watch

    Good Morning,

Yesterday I was busy running around taking care of errands and other things when I was approached in the jewelry aisle by a woman who was looking for something specific.  Why she thought I was an employee is beyond me, but I did not mind assisting.

As luck would have it, I was wearing a piece of Chain Maille or two, and interested in what I was wearing, she figured I must know about jewelry.  That was some pretty good thinking on her part.

We scoured the aisles looking for what she wanted, unable to find the exact item we had a little consultation and came up with an alternative.  After purchasing the material necessary, we sat down at the entrance and I showed her how to put the item together, and sent her on her merry way to finish up the project, wrap it and get it to where it needed to go.

Intrigued with the idea, although I do not like the Dione / Italian Pandora jewelry (I think it is tacky and ugly), I fiddled around with the idea and came up with this watch.

Pretty in it’s own way, it would be wonderful for those that like the big clunky-chunky jewelry look that is so fashionable and popular these days.  From charm bracelets to necklaces, watches and earrings, these are simple and easy to make on your own.  If you can push a thread through a bead, you can make any of the items above with materials from your local craft store.

A Little Shop of Artists exclusive, $40.00.  This watch will not be listed on line.  Special requests are always honored.  Not local?  Give us a call or send us an e-mail and we will be happy to create one for your, or send you this one if you prefer.

    askus@littleshopofartists.com

The beads are glass and lined with a metal grommet, adding a little accent to the dark bead.  Matching Pink Rhinestone spacer beads set off the lighter pastel color of the glass, making a lovely sparkly design.  The Rhinestones on the watch face catch the light nicely, the silver tone metal is bright and shiny.

Glass beads are threaded along the metal watch band.  If you get bored with this look, it is an easy thing to change the beads along the length of the band.

Measuring at about 8″ this is a great band for those with a wider wrist, the beads do not interfere with the fit and feel rather cool to the touch when worn.

The watch face is very attractive, oval in shape the numbers are easy to read.  The face is small enough to be feminine yet substantial enough to make a lovely focal point.

Thank you for stopping by and having a look.

The Alchemists Vessel would like to wish you a pleasant day.

    Wednesday News and Demonstration Listing

    Good Morning,

The blog ring is on hiatus again, and I have fallen behind with this last post.  Last week, Pam of A Bead Thing was featured, if you missed that, please feel free to roll back to the post and see what she doesn’t have on offer in her shop on handmadeartists.com

The first week at Little Shop of Artists was interesting.

Today I am in the garage painting more shelves, installing them and preparing to open the store tomorrow through the weekend.

If you’re in the Boise area stop on by and say Hello, see what’s on the shelves.  If you’re an artists we have plenty of room for more displays for more items.  Come on down and check out the interior and see of we can’t find a spot for you.

    In the Shop Demonstrations:

Captured Inverted Round Weave Chain Maille

Silver Plated and Anodized Aluminum rings make this pretty and interesting bracelet.  Alixandra of The Alchemists Vessel will be demonstrating the weave Thursday – Sunday at the shop.

We hope that you may find some time in your busy schedule to come down and visit.

Thank you for having a look.

The Alchemists Vessel would like to wish you a pleasant day.
