Five Great Gifts To Give List 31

Good Morning,

We usually showcase Five Items from Five different shops around the web.  The Holidays are right around the corner, and now is the time to map out those shops and places you would like to visit.

Today we’re going to do things a little bit backwards and talk about where you can find these things that are shared every Tuesday.

Why Shop At a Big Box or overpriced Department Store when you can Shop Small Business and Shop locally.

Little Shop of Artists:
6713 Fiarview Ave, Ste., B
Boise  ID, 83704

Featuring locally handmade quality good from talented people in and around the Boise, Idaho area.

Displaying Artists:
The Alchemists Vessel
Blackbird Metalworks
Wire Witchery
The Muddfip Photographer
Green Witch Handmade

Come on in and see what these folks have on display.

The links above will take you to the artists personal webpage or Etsy store.

What is Etsy?  As a friend once quipped, “Etsy, it’s the world’s garage sale.”  That is a fairly accurate description.  Although much higher quality than your typical neighborhood Garage Sale, there is a lot to wade through.  There are thousands of shops and items of all kinds from sellers with “on-line stores” on the site Etsy.  I look at it as one big Mall.  The Big Orange Box with an E in it is the logo for Etsy, you may find a click-able icon to your left on the side menu.

Handmade Artists – handmadeartists.com is another Artist to Customer Shopping Venue that deals strictly with handmade goods.  Everything on the site is handmade from start to finish, by the seller.  You will find up-cycled items, but vintage, mass-produced or manufactured items are not allowed on the site.  A truly unique little shopping site.  You may find click-able icons to the left on the side bar menu for the sites Forum, Shops and Blog.

If you’re an artists in the Boise or surrounding Treasure Valley Area we have lots of room for you to display your wares.  Monthly rental fee applies, artists keep all sales money.  Give us a call or stop by the shop, bring your work, we’d love a look and to find a place for your items in the store.

Thank you for stopping in and having a look.

The Alchemists Vessel would like to wish you a pleasant day.

But There’s Nothing To Do!

Good Morning,

Although Summer is over here in Boise, the Thunderstorms have started and it rains almost daily, it also mean that school is back in and for many the repeated plaintive cry, “But there’s nothing to do!”

Here’s something to do with the whole family, just yourself, grab your friends, or make it a date.

Art in the Park

If you click through to the site, you can find a map of the Artists as well as other event times and information.  This a great big huge outdoor event, that includes a Beer Garden.

Although Little Shop of Artists is not attendance, we of the shop are intending to go this weekend.  Once we have the details of our visit, those will be posted.

There are other neat things to do in town this weekend as well, unfortunately the events are not listed on line.  Check the Boise, Weekly or the Idaho Statesman for a list of goings-on and happenings in your area.

You could always stop in Little Shop of Artists and see what we have on the shelves, bring a friend, bring your work, we’d love to see you.

Thank you for stopping in and having a look.

The Alchemists Vessel would like to wish you a pleasant day.

KAL with Alix- Camouflage Scarf

Good Morning,

Today’s blog is brief as we begin to Knit-A-Long With Alix, from the Alchemists Vessel.

This project is a scarf, appropriate for men or women.  This is my very first item that I will knit and add for sale to the shop.

“Camouflage”

I will be using Bernat Softee Chunky Ombre Yarn in 20944 “Dad’s Scarf”, 11 stitches to the inch, on size US 11 Needles.  Here I have wound the first skein into a ball instead of the skein and label they come in.  This is a nice soft acrylic yarn that will hold up to heavy wear and  you can throw it in the washing machine.

Please excuse the other materials on the table, we are busy at the shop and never just craft one thing at a time.  The other materials are for making Chain Maille, and the class Satin Crystal Weave Bracelet project we offer at the shop.

The colors are a deep green, black, dark grey, olive green and a bright grey color that almost looks white against the darker contrast of the other colors.  The yarn reminds a great deal of Camouflage.

The pattern is a simple short row work and turn with wrapped stitches forming a interesting decorative loop in the triangles created by this pattern.

Materials

Bernat Softee Chunky 20944 “Dad’s Scarf” (11 stitches to the inch)
3 Balls (77 yards / 70 m – 2.80 oz / 80g) “Ombre” yarn (wt. 6)
Size 11 US needles (8.0 mm)
Tapestry needle
Gauge: 11sts x 14 rows = 4″ (10cm)
You may choose a yarn that appeals to you.

K = Knit
P =Purl
WS = Wrap Stitch*

Pattern Note:
To work a *Wrapped Stitch:
Knit the number of stitches listed in the row
Slip the next stitch Purlwise to the Right Hand Needle
Bring your yarn to the front of the work
Slip the stitch back to the Left Hand Needle
Turn your work
Bring the Yarn to the Front of your work (you just wrapped the stitch)
Slip the first stitch on the Left Hand needle to the Right Needle
Purl to the end of the row

To Work the wrapped stitches in pattern:
Knit to the Wrapped Stitch
Slip the stitch to the Right Hand needle without knitting it
Slide the tip of the left hand needle into the Horizontal bar (formed around the stitch by bringing the yarn to the front and then back of your work).  With the wrap on the needle, slide the LEFT HAND needle through the first stitch on the right hand needle and Knit the stitch.

Short Row Scarf Pattern

C/O 20 sts.

K rows 1 and 2 (this will give you a nice foundation to begin).
Row 3 – K 16, WS, Turn
Rows 4, 6, 8, 10 Purl to the end of row
Row 5 – K 12, WS, Turn
Row 7 – K 8, WS, Turn
Row 9 – K4, WS, Turn
Row 11 – K to the end of the row, picking up all wrapped stitches
(First Triangle Complete)
Row 12 – K 4, WS, Turn
Rows – 13, 15, 17, 19 Purl to end of row
Row 14 – K 4, pick up WS, K3, WS, Turn
Row 16 – K 8, pick up WS, K3, WS, Turn
Row 18 – K 12, pick up WS, K3, WS, Turn
Row 20 – K 16, pick up WS, K to end of Row.
(Second Triangle Complete)

Continue working these 20 Rows for the entire length of your Scarf.

Progress pictures coming.  Next Wednesday we will look at progress and continuing to knit with a second ball / skein.

The cool thing about this pattern is that it looks the same on both sides and the alternating triangles give it a nice textured feel and look.  One will be Stockinette the other Garter Stitch, not only is it a nice texture, it helps to define the pattern and makes the triangles pop.

Because my ball was knotted and not wound right towards the inside I am missing a good 12 yards of yarn, so your length of scarf after you finish the first ball may be longer than the progress pictures, that is OK.

Thank you for stopping in and having a look.

The Alchemists Vessel would like to wish you a pleasant day.

pink funny bunny crochet child stuffed animal toy

https://www.thecraftstar.com/Upload/product/2240/103840-product_name1377538871.JPG

Miss Pink Funny Bunny is ready to bring joy and fun to your child.  Isn’t she cute with that pretty dress highlighted with smiling sun buttons and yellow trim?  Any little girl would love to call her their own, for play time, tea time, or cuddle time.  (If your child would prefer, I would be happy to create a funny bunny in their favorite color.
Miss Bunny measures 8″ high, so she is a great size to carry everywhere.  All the buttons are sewn on by hand, and the dress is removeable, but I do not recommend this toy for children under 3 years of age.
The pattern for this bunny is from the book “Mr. Funky’s super crochet wonderful” of North Light Books and was found on the Lion Brand Yarn website.  The bunny is made from 100% acrylic fun yarn and fiberfill stuffing.

Studio News – The Alchemists Vessel’s Five (5) Star Rating

Good Morning,

Wednesday the day that isn’t quite the beginning of the week and isn’t quite the end of week, an odd day, but a good day.

This morning I would like to re-introduce The Alchemists Vessel’s various websites and other things going on in and around the studio and the physical store.

The Alchemists Vessel has a website, two on line stores to shop, and a blog, well of course it does, you’re reading it.

The on line stores are on Etsy and Handmadeartists.com.

Etsy has a bad habit of changing things around on you, rather like Facebook, it is annoying and most frustrating at times.  However on occasion the changes, though not necessarily beneficial, they can be interesting.  This newest change is kind of neat and can be found on the menu bar to the left of the shop window.  The photo below is taken from the Administration Section of the shop.

Although the rating is not truly accurate on the shop’s page, Etsy has dropped 14 of my followers, and 9 reviews, The Alchemists Vessel still looks pretty good.  The store boasts 124 Admirers, 102 Sales, 86 of which have reviews, 57 of which have additonal comments, and only the most recent 48 are shown.  Disappointing to say the least, but it’s nice to know that the Vessel has a five (5)  Star rating.  The ratings are taken from the information above as left by customers, the shop has nothing to do with its own rating at all. I am very pleased!

Little Shop of Artists is coming along nicely and we hope to fill the store from floor to ceiling with more unique and wonderful items for your gift giving needs.

With the Holidays right around the corner we have some fun things coming up at the shop in October.  Septemeber is dedicated to organizing all these things, and we will be open for shopping!

Entertainment and Fun at Little Shop of Artists
Open Haunted House
Spooky Earring Class **to be announced before Halloween.
Henna Tattoos
Tarot Readings
and more…

Hope to see you there.

Thank you for stopping in and having a look.

The Alchemists Vessel would like to wish you a pleasant day.

Illusion (Shadow) Knitting – FREE PATTERN

NOTE: When first published there was an error at Row 32 of the pattern, this post has been edited and reflects the correct pattern.  *A Chart is also available, if you would prefer.  Please contact us here to have one -e-mailed to you for free.

Good Morning,

Wednesday’s posts are usually devoted to new goings on in the studio or the shop.  We will save that for Friday this week I think.

I was asked recently if I know how to create and write a pattern?  In other words, Do I really know what I am doing?  Well, yes, yes, I do.

Although I wrote this pattern a couple of years ago, it may still be knit with the same results.  Featured on The Leaky Cauldron , Harry Potter Crafts, (gallery photo, site is currently under going changes and Tutorial / Instruction are unavailable), it is an easy pattern to follow.

The finished product creates an illusion.  When viewed straight on the piece appears to be striped, when viewed at an angle a picture appears.

Illusion knitting is easier than it looks.

Pattern Instructions are below:

I used Caron Simply Soft 100% Acrylic Worsted Weight (4) in Dark Country Blue and Heather Grey for the colors, like the movie. I changed it to banner or wall hanging. It is about 18-1/2″ long from end to end fringe adds about 3″ to 6″ to over all length (depending on fringe length).

A few notes about the pattern:

The instructions below are for the WRONG SIDE of the pattern only. The RIGHT SIDE is KNIT every row! Just knit nothing else. I did say KNIT the RIGHT SIDE, right?

Ravenclaw Illusion (Shadow) Banner

Approx: 18-1/2″ (23-1/2″ with fringe)

Materials: Caron Simply Soft 100% Acrylic in Dark Country Blue [MC] and Grey Heather [CC] (no dye lot), 1 skein each (about 315 yards). You may choose any worsted weight yarn in the color of your choice.

Needles: Size 6 (US) straight

Gauge: is about 22 sts and 36 rows = 4″, or about 6-1/2 (7) sts. per inch.

NOTES: Two rows of each color are worked and then changed for the next two rows so on and so forth, continue in this manner for the entire project. Carry the colors loosely up the side at each color change, no one will ever notice. Instructions are written for the wrong side only, KNIT every right side (odd numbered) row.

It takes four rows of knitting to complete one row of pattern, the first row is establishing the illusion [CC] the next rows follow the illusion in reverse [MC] making the stitches “pop” out from the material.

The first and last 2 stitches of pattern are a selvage edge to help the piece lay flat and not roll. Light blocking will help if your banner rolls too much.

The design (illusion) is a total of 150 rows, counting the beginning border and end Bind Off rows. The photo is a mirror image, your bird will face the opposite direction when completed.  (New Photos have been provided).

Abbreviations:

K = Knit
P = Purl
MC = Main Color
CC = Contrast Color
sts. = stitches

Pattern:

CO 35 sts. in MC
Row 1 KNIT
Row 2 PURL
Change to CC
Row 3 Knit
Row 4 Purl
Change to MC
Rows 5 and 6 repeat rows 1 and 2 one time. (Border is complete)
Row 7 – Change to CC, Knit to end (right side row)
(Begin Pattern, this row is the toe)
Row 8 – k2, p10, k1, p to last two sts. k2
Change to MC Knit to end
Row 10 – K12, p1, k to end.
Continue in this fashion, changing from MC to CC every two rows for the rest of the rows
Row 12 – k2, p10, k1, p2, k1, p to last two sts. k2
Row 14 – k12, p1, k2, p1, k to end

Fringe

Cut 14 12″ inch pieces of MC and 13 12″ pieces CC divide into our groups of three, using two strands of MC and 1 strand of CC for middle fringe piece. Find the center bottom of your banner and attach the blue/grey fringe there, alternate the other eight sections and space them equally along the bottom of the banner.

Hang it on your wall, your all done!

NOTE 2:  If desired you may continue in Stockinette Stitch, working the stripe pattern until it is the desired length, you may then follow the instructions from row 136 through row 1 (knit it upside down) and have the image on the opposite side creating a scarf.  You may also continue in the stripe pattern until the piece is 18″ shorter than you would like.  Work the Illusion piece and Kitchner stitch or join the pieces together.  Whichever your preferred method the scarf will be stunning in the end.

A little validation or verification… This pattern was originally posted on my knitting blog “Arachknits” (the blog is no longer in use, but the link and pattern are still there.

 Crafty Witch Joséesaid…
Hi A….!
First, let me say I’m sorry to post a comment on your blog like this. I generally prefer to e-mail people, but as I couldn’t find any other means of contacting you, here I am, posting on your blog 🙂

I am writing to you because I’m a crafty witch for The Leaky Cauldron, working in the Harry Potter Crafts section, which you can see here: http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/features/crafts.

As you can see, we are posting tutorials and pictures for all sorts of Harry Potter Crafts there, and I was wondering if you would allow us to post the Ravenclaw illusion banner pictures and tutorial posted above. We would also love to post the pictures for the knitted Hedwig (pattern from Charmed Knits). We would identify the pictures and pattern as coming from you . There is also a disclaimer in each of the tutorials, as well as 2 long paragraphs on the front page of the crafts section explaining visitors that they should use the patterns they see on the website for their personal use and not to sell them, as the designers are the only ones who own the copyrights and rights to those items. There is also a copyright sign right by the author’s name on the page of a particular item. Last but not least, you will notice that the credits at the bottom of each crafts mentions a source, so in your case, it would say that your tutorial was taken with permission from Arachknits and we would include a direct link to the place where the tutorial can be found on your site.

The Leaky Cauldron easily gets between 70,000 and 1,000,000 hits per month. I believe letting us add your patterns and pictures there would increase your visibility too. And of course, it would enable thousands of crafters all around the world to make wonderful crafts like yours!
Hoping to post your creations soon!

P.S.: We would appreciate it if you could reply to us (whether you’re interested or not) by e-mail at crafts@the-leaky-cauldron.org, as we crafty witches figure out our to-do list from the conversations in our e-mail account. Also be sure to include a link to your charts in the message, otherwise the other crafty witches may not know which pattern you are referring to! Thanks!

Chart – if you look closely you can see the eagle.

Reverse side, concerned your image isn’t coming out correctly?  Flip your knitting over and check.

When viewed from an angle the raised stitches “pop” creating the “illusion” of the eagle.
