Yes, yes the blog is late, but better late than never.  This weeks Featured Artist is A List Designs a mother and daughter team.  Don’t miss out on this fun and unique shop.

Bio:  We are a mother & daughter team, who love creating original jewelry designs. Daughter began creating beaded jewelry in 2004. In 2009, daughter enrolled in classes with a professional metalsmith. Mother joined the world of jewelry design in 2007, with daughter’s instruction. Together they launched A List Designs in 2010.

A List Designs offers handcrafted earrings, necklaces, bracelets and rings using sterling silver, 14k gold fill, precious/semi-precious gemstones and pearls. Right now in our life time, we have an opportunity like no others before us, we can truly go where no man has gone before, that is exciting, and wonderful and wondrous, a marvelous something to behold.

Thursday Workbench Woes

 

Good Morning,

 

As I await the Blog Ring to begin again, I am left with empty space for posting.

 

Some of you are aware of the household incidents that have been plaguing me of late, leaks, floods, electrical wiring weirdness, wasp infestation…  In the midst of all that my poor workbench has become the catch-all for odds and ends bits and pieces.

 

I am usually a very organized craft-person, everything in its place, cubby-holes, bins, boxes, baskets, bags, nooks, crannies, shelves, drawers, the odd table corner even.  I am finding it most difficult to work under these conditions.

Yes, I used to sit in that chair, and work on that table, you can see some of the items I have discussed here including a color wheel, sandpaper, a set of craft knives, my mini-torch, light box, and various tools and other equipment.  

 

With the workbench in such a state, I have been delegated to the Dining table in the great room.

 

You guys are laughing now…

 

Since a good portion of my materials and supplies are small they require little space, or so one would think.  Right.  Due to the mentioned mishaps much of my shelf space has vanished, so I have managed to cram everything into the closet.  When I say I work out of my closet, I ain’t kidding.

The supply closet, whether you work in an office or at home, eventually you need someplace to put those things you use for work.  Cubby-holes, bins, boxes, baskets, bags, nooks, crannies, shelves, drawers and the file cabinet corners are full to the brim with beads, wire, string, clasps, buttons, clay, twine, charms, ribbon, just about every conceivable and imagined item can be found with in the depths of the Supply Closet…  Happy Hunting!

In My Studio At The Work Bench Wednesday

 

Good Morning,

The middle of week arrives, bright, shiny and hot!  It has been over 100 degrees here in the lovely City of Trees, and yesterday the high was a scorching 105!

 

I am so glad that there is air-conditioning in the office / work area.

 

I have been working on a number of things, including the fourth module or unit of my own class.  Excited about finishing up one or two of the graded assignments as well.

 

Currently we are designing a line of rugged, strong, handsome, durable and sustainable jewelry for men.  Gemstones, Chainmaille, and natural materials for bold, solid, statement pieces that work well for costume or casual attire.  We are also working on a line of finer jewelry accessories like tie-tacks and rings and are in hope of showcasing those items soon.

Primitive and  rustic is “Thane“, an Antiqued Bronze and genuine Pyrite necklace woven in the Full Persian Chainmaille weave.  Perhaps the Badge of Honor or Mark of Rank with in the Clan or Village.  The pendant is a genuine Pyrite “Doughnut” left in a natural state with pits and polish along the surface.  (I said PITS).  A natural Pyrite oval bead accents the center of the pendant.  The toggle clasp is manufactured and fits the style of the chain well.

 

*The word Thane usually means any person holding an aristocratic status somewhere between Baron and Freeman under an Anglo-Saxon Lord.

Antiqued Bronze jump rings are linked together in the Full Persian Chainmaile weave, formed by beginning on either side of the pendant and ending in a double-loop toggle clasp closure. 

Detail: The genuine Pyrite Doughnut has been strung on Jeweler‘s Bronze (Merlin’s Gold) wire, and a genuine Pyrite bead has been centered as an accent, creating a unique and interesting focal point.

The Full Persian Chainmaille weave is intricate and beautiful.  Strong and supple, it feels smooth when running a hand along the surface.  It has the  appearance of interlocking individual units, although the chain is created two jump rings at a time.

 

The Toggle clasp is a simple and sturdy closure.  A bar is attached to two lengths of chain in this style and it’s circular “lock” is attached to the opposite end of the chain, the bar is slipped through the circle and holds itself in place, as seen here.   This particular toggle clasp works exceptionally well with this chainmaille weave it allows for the double row of jump rings to remain consistent and even, ensuring a balanced and secure fit.

 

Also along the same rustic and primitive lines is a piece I haven’t decided what to title it yet.  Based on a Rohirric ideal of design is “Horse Lord”.  

 

Created using natural bone carved into to a horse head toggle clasp is just the start of my version of what is commonly called a “Torq” (also spelled Torc and Torque).  A Torq consists of long strands of metal that have been twisted or woven together to form a rope, the ends are capped with balls, squares, and sometimes the heads of animals worked or cast in metal.  Some torqs were meant to be worn for life and were very difficult to remove if made of metal bars bent in to shape and closed or secured with heavy metal end caps.  Many modern jewelers still use a method of twisting or weaving metal strands sometimes called “Viking Knitting”.  This piece is a twist on the traditional design idea, incorporating chainmaille instead of strands and a toggle clasp for easy on off, instead of a permanent adornment.  A work in progress there is only about 3-1/2″ total completed.  The two inches of chain is Antiqued Copper spun in a smaller diameter for a sleeker look.

 

Highly detailed carved natural bone Horse Head toggle clasp, its mate is a round piece of bone shaped to fit over and rest with the curve of the neck.  May be worn in front, back or on the side to show off this very handsome and well done equine portrait.

 

The other side of the toggle.  Mouth, nose (even nostrils), mane, eye, and ears are easily seen.  The eye has been painted with a tiny dot of black for definition.  The short length of chain beginning the Torq can also be seen.

1950’s Meakin Tea Cup Trio Vintage Tea Set

Description: An unusual tea cup trio by Meakin. The set includes a teacup, saucer and cake plate. This set is really beautiful and is in a matte lustre finish which is unusual for teacups. This gives it a lovely silk like feeling to the cup. The motif is a pink flower with a mint green/ blue type colour and green leaves. The motif is also inside the tea cup. The actual shape of the teacup is also unusual for this design.

Very elegant and in great condition. Would be lovely for afternoon tea.

1950’s Tea Cup Vintage Tea Set Violet Flower Tea Cup Set

Description: A 1950’s teacup trio including teacup, saucer and cake plate.  Made in the 1950’s by Duchess.  English Bone China with gilt edges.

Violet/ Viola flowers motif on teacup as well as saucer and cake plate. Very dainty and beautiful. The teacup is footed.

The Seventies were cool, hip and happening. Harken back to that fab era with these super groovy black and white circular earrings! Natural shell encircle genuine Jet beads for a fun retro look. Citrine Triangles

These are plain, simple and very cute. I left them as unadorned as possible to show off the gorgeous yellow of the genuine natural Citrine beads.

Would be a great alternative to Topaz for a November Birthday.

Sterling Silver plated jewelry wire is threaded through the side drilled beads, twisted to hold a loop and attached to Silver plated ear wires.

In an attempt to create a simple but handsome and elegant line of jewelry for men, these necklaces would be appropriate for women as well.   Many of our chainmaille designs are crafted with the male wearer in mind, however, one a smaller scale the patterns also make wonderfully delicate and feminine chains and earrings as well.

Bass Solo

 

Part of our Gems for Gents line of jewelry, this masculine and attractive necklace is very handsome, and would be appropriate for women as well, it hangs at 18″ total length. A beautiful flat oval Brecciated Jasper Bead is centered and framed by oval shaped Pyrite, the intermittent pattern of Jasper and Pyrite continue around the length of the necklace.

Genuine Brecciated Jasper (Red Jasper with Black Matrix), and Pyrite beads are strung on Tiger Tail beading wire and completed with a silver base metal Lobster Claw clasp.

Guitar-god

Oval coin shaped Black Onyx beads travel along the length of this 18″ necklace, and are interrupted by the occasional flat oval pyrite bead. Masculine, bold and very dapper.

Genuine Black Onyx and Pyrite beads are strung on Tiger Tail beading wire, and finished with a Lobster Claw Clasp.

Hit The Lights

Monster of Rock

Part of our Gems for Gents line of jewelry, this is a unique and sturdy necklace. Zoesite is a lovely green stone from Australia, occasionally it is encrusted with natural ruby inclusions across the stone’s surface in a stunning mix of reds and purples against the green background of the Zoesite.

Perfect for your Man of Metal, or that special Zombie in your life, or it would make a fabulous addition to a Halloween themed costume or outfit.

A rare form of Tiger Eye is Pietersite.  This gorgeous brown and red stone has flecks of green, gold and blue and yellow running through in the bead in beautiful striations of muted color.  Resembling a well worn leather “Bomber” Jacket, this makes a bold and masculine piece.

Friday Local Links and Promotions

 

Friday is here, and the weekend is right around the corner!

 

Speaking of the weekend, this is a big deal up here, and it is fun.  The Western Idaho Fair is this month.  August 17 through the 26th, 2012.  Contests, Farm Exhibits, Rides and Funnel cake.

Jo-Ann Fabric and Crafts Stores has new Jewelry-Making classes, with Alixandra Browning of The Alchemists Vessel.  Come on down and have an enjoyable afternoon of fun and crafting.  Projects suitable for all ages, taught in a classroom at the store in a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere.  These are the projects for August.  Don’t forget to ask abut special deals when signing up for class, many have up to a 50% discount on the listed price.

Green Chutes

 

I don’t know anything about this other than they are up the street from my house.  The appear to be an Artists Co-Op that sells food.  I have never been there, and should probably go.  Off State Street in the Collister Shopping Center near the Bowling Alley. If any of you have been there, a review would be wonderful.
