Featured Artists – Brooklyn Bead Goddess

Good Morning,

This morning we feature April, the Brooklyn Bead Goddess, of  Handmade Artists.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, April’s love of Lampworking or “flameworking” glass, began when she was a young girl wandering the boardwalks of Coney Island and watching the Glass Artists there create their amazing, detailed and fragile sculptures.  This life-long love affair with glass is apparent from her incredible pieces.  She takes the time to learn new things, materials and techniques and incorporates then into her designs.

She is also a member of The International Organization for Self-Representing Artists in Jewelry Design.  SRAJD stands for Self-Representing Artist Jewelry Designer. A SRAJD member sells jewelry they designed and created. They are not permitted to sell mass produced jewelry or jewelry that hasn’t been made by themselves.

When you purchase from an SRAJD member, you are buying directly from and supporting the artist.

That being said, let’s take a look at some of her stunning pieces.

Lampwork Earrings Handmade Glass Beads Handcrafted Wearable Art Jewelry SRA SRAJD

Product Details:

Handmade brown and green glass beads made by melting glass in a torch flame. I love the contrast of these two colors. Bottom brown bead has a green swirl design, top brown bead has raised green dots and drops of crystal clear glass on each dot. Intricate, one of a kind pair of earrings.
Sterling silver ball beads on top, middle and bottom. Sterling silver wire wrapped onto a soldered jump ring connected to Sterling silver french ear wires.
Measures from top of ear wire to bottom 1 1/2 inches.
These lampwork glass beads are made by myself in a torch flame. They are digitally kiln annealed for added strength and durability. I clean the bead holes myself using a special dremel diamond drill bit. They are closely inspected before using in my designs. I take pride in my work and you will too when you wear a piece of Wearable Art.
I am a registered Self Representing Artist (SRA) member number G-122 and registered Self Representing Artist Jewelry Designer (SRAJD) number 2147.

Lampwork Necklace Handcrafted Glass Beads Handmade Artisan Jewelry SRA SRAJD

Product Details:
The focal bead on this necklace takes patience and a long time to create. It’s a hollow glass lampwork bead. I’ve added handmade white squiggle designs over the blue transparent glass. Copper bead caps on each side. Shades of blue and white glass have been used in the twenty lampwork glass beads throughout the design. Each one made by melting glass in a torch fire flame. 
This necklace also has four unique blue goldstone beads along with the iridescent gray pearl beads.  
Large fancy sterling silver toggle clasp closure. 
Measures 23 inch neckline.
Sterling silver crimp beads and wire protectors used. 
All the lampwork glass beads I use are handmade by myself by melting glass in a torch flame. The Moretti Glass / Effetre Glass glass I use is Made in Italy and imported to America. Handmade Glass Bracelet with fifteen handcrafted lampwork beads. Each one has been made by me, one at a time in a torch flame. I used shades of browns, beige, peach, white and creamsicle. Decorative designs were then added for a unique look. Topaz/Orange iridescent swarovski crystals added with small sterling silver beads. Toggle clasp closure is sterling silver.
Measures 6 3/4 inside
and end to end is 8 inches

Featured Artist – A Bead Thing

Good Morning,

Today’s featured artist is the lovely and very busy Pam, of A Bead thing.  This is one talented and on the go lady.  Not only does she own an operate her own shop on handmadeartists.com, she also Home-schools her Grandson, and is an active member on the forum participating in blogging, tweeting and site contests.  Where she finds the time to create her wonderful jewelry is a mystery to me, but she does, and is it every pretty.

Pam writes: Handcrafted jewelry is my passion. Choose handcrafted bracelets, rings, necklaces and pendants. I especially love creating bead woven jewelry because of the enormous variety in colors available and the diversity in style that can be created. Bead woven or stitched items are also lightweight and easily cared for. All contributed content © abeadthing

There are some really beautiful and unique items in her shop.  Some of my favorites are below.

Bloodstone Pendant

Product Details:
This is approximately 20 mm bloodstone gem enclosed in a handwoven copper wire and bail.  This stone has multicolored spots including red.  These stones are a variety of a silica mineral chalcedony and the red spots resemble blood which is how it derived its name.  From the Gemstone Encyclopedia we find that in ancient times, bloodstone was thought to be able to stop hemorrhages with the merest touch. Bloodstone is said to relieve stomach and bowel pain as well as strengthening blood purifying organs and improving blood circulation. Bloodstone is also believed to have a positive influence on the bladder. 

Although this item has sold, it is a beautiful piece.  We’d like to congratulate Pam on her sale, and also drool over this gorgeous handmade bracelet.

Silver and Topaz Bracelet

Product Details:

Using a commercial silver bezel type bead with a clay colored stone, I have added topaz 4mm swarovski crystals in a right angle weave pattern to connect the bezel beads into a wonderully elegant bracelet .  This bracelet looks spectacular with jeans and sweater as well.  Measures 7.5 inches.

Handcrafted Copper Swirls with Gray Marble Stones

Product Details:

Copper 20 gauge scroll type swirls are used here to connect the copper wire wrapped gray marble stones.  Necklace is 20 inches in length  The irregularity in shape of these marble stones add to the beautiful of the copper swirls.

The intricate bead work of this bracelet just astounds me.  How did she do that?

Ruby Red Swarovski Crystal Bracelet

Product Details:

This gorgeous bracelet is created using 6mm swarovski red crystals and 6/0 and 8/0 gold myuki seed beads in a braided beadweaving technique.  This is a bracelet fit for a queen.  Measures 7.5 inches.
Special orders for larger or smaller sizes are also available.  Other colors of crystals are also available upon request. 

What a cool little accessory, too pretty for keys, I would hang this from a purse or backpack strap, although keys would be good, too.

Red Carnelian Stone Keychain

Product Details:

Using 6mm red carnelia stones I have created another of the fabulous keychains.  This keychain measures approximately 2 inches without the ring.  

Attach the keychain to your purse easily or use as a zipper pull for the purse closures.
You could also use this with a small modification in the ring as a zipper pull for your favorite hoodie to add a bit of glitz and glamour.

Simple DIY Jewelry You’ll Really Wear – One

Monday is here, alas.

This morning’s post is first in a series of easy do-it-yourself jewelry projects that you can do in as little or as much time as you like and the neat thing is, some are great for kids with parental super vision.

If you can close a Safety Pin you can make this simple and pretty bracelet, and no one has to know they are safety pins.

The type of Safety pin works best.  The Cord will be threaded through the holes at the top and bottom of the pin.

I did not take photos, and this is a straight forward project.

Materials

1 pkg. 1mm Elastic Beading Cord
Ample Safety Pins (wrist circumferences vary we suggest 50 or more)
Seed Beads 6.0 or larger in the color(s) of choice. Bead hole needs to fit over pin prong.
Super Glue
*6mm “Spacer” Beads (less pins will be required of beads are used)

Cut 2 pieces of the Elastic Beading Cord,  12″ in length.
Tie a knot about 2″ down from one end of both cords (do not tie them together).

Open a Safety pin and add beads along the prong, leave enough space to close the pin again.  Repeat with the remainder of the pins.  Be creative, play with colors, allow your imagination to design the piece for you.

Super glue the Safety Pins shut.  This way they will not open and scratch you when wearing the bracelet.

Thread a *Spacer bead, these can be glass, metal, anything you like, on one piece of cord and slide it down to the knot. 

Thread the cord through the top “hole” in the safety pin, add a spacer bead.  Sliding the Pin and Bead down the cord.

Continue adding Pins and Spacer Beads until the Pins fit around you wrist and the ends meet.

Add a final spacer bead to the cord and tie a knot keeping it in place.

With the second piece of cord, thread on one spacer bead, and thread the cord through the bottom holes of the Pins, adding spacer beads between each pin.  Work until you reach the last pin in the row.

Place a final Spacer bead on the cord.  Tie the matching ends of the cords together, closing the bracelet.  Not too tight, you want to be able to slip the bracelet on and off easily and not cut off your circulation while wearing it.

As well, you can say, “I made this.”

Give it try, it takes about an hour.

Studio News Ring – Ring

Happy Wednesday!

The week is almost over, and it has been a busy last couple of days.

This morning I would like to share the latest listing for a new ring,  at Blackbird Metalworks, as well as sharing one of the Jo-Ann’s Class projects that you can learn to make when you sign up for the Brochure Jewelry Making or the Trend Classes lead by Alixandra of The Alchemsits Vessel and Blackbird Metalworks.

Sky – Sterling Silver and Genuine Turquoise Ring

This pretty little ring has a genuine Natural Turquoise cabochon, hand set with sterling silver bezel strip and .5mm twisted gallery wire, shank is sterling silver and hand soldered to the cabochon setting.  A size US 6-1/2, this is a feminine and very attractive little accent ring.

The stone is not cracked, it has been left in it’s natural shape and state, instead of being shaped, filled or polished with resin, it has been set just as it was.

The ring below is made from 20g Sterling Silver plated and 24 kt dyed copper jewelry wire and was made using a variety of glass beads.

Featured Artists Brooklyn Bead Goddess

Today I am pleased to present fellow Forum member and handmadeartists.com shop owner April, the Brooklyn Bead Goddess.

April has always been intrigued with glass, and remembers watching the Glass Artists along the boardwalk of Cony Island, captivated by the sparkling and delicate sculptures they made.  As an adult April has taken that childhood fascination and turned it into a business.  She is also  a registered SRA member G-122, and SRAJD # 2147 member.

 

Created by lampworking or flameworking, April takes glass rods turns them into beautiful glass beads, which she then incorporates into her own lovely jewelry designs.  She over sees all aspects of the process including kiln annealing and final cleaning with a special bit for her dremel tool.

Recently  she has started to make large hole beads that are so popular right now, like the Pandora bracelets.  I like hers better, though.

Lampwork Glass Bracelet Handmade Beads Handcrafted Wearable Art Jewelry SRA and SRAJD

 

Product Details: Ten lampwork glass handmade beads made one at a time in a torch flame. I created these using a mixture to make a deep red base with opaque mauve/purple designs and opaque medium orange yellow. I love the combination of colors and the swarovski crystals in a deep ruby color really brightens the look. Also added are sterling silver 4 mm and 6 mm ball beads. Wearable Art~

Product Details: Handmade brown and green glass beads made by melting glass in a torch flame. I love the contrast of these two colors. Bottom brown bead has a green swirl design, top brown bead has raised green dots and drops of crystal clear glass on each dot. Intricate, one of a kind pair of earrings.
Sterling silver ball beads on top, middle and bottom. Sterling silver wire wrapped onto a soldered jump ring connected to Sterling silver french ear wires.
